Default Moose hunting in WMU 542-541 and 540

Just come from a hunting trip in WMU 542-541 and 540.

Here are some tips.

WMU 542:

When you get to intersection of Hwy 88 and 754, you can go east.
AT km18 there is a plant with 2 really nice cut line.
At km24, there are 3 cut blocks with one cut line but you need a quad to explore this area.
We met a nice guys that work in the area and he said there are a lots of wolves but not a many as up North so hunting is still "easy"
If you keep driving on Hwy 88 there is a CNRL plant at about 100 kms North. There are a lots of road access. We saw a lots of signs there including some really nice Caribous.
2 moose has been put down while we were there.
We saw 3 fresh track. You need a quad.
This area is hunted by Native people when they cannot access their settlement so they can be hard on it as all roads are well maintained by CNRL.

WMU 541

If you keep driving North, the road is not paved anymore. It is hard on your windshield ! You don't have many access to cut line or cut block from the road. Quad is a must.
We met a retired person that was there since September 1st. He saw so far more than 200 wolves including a pack of 14 putting down a moose in front of him as he was calling. He shot 3 of them.
7 wolves have been killed in 3 days last week end.
One hunter was calling and a pack of 6 came right at him. He shot one.

There is an outfitter (Concession #794 Brown dogs outfitters) that bait for bear for almost 50 kms. Simply ridiculous! This guys should be reported to Wildlife! The retired guy said he bait in the spring but as we didn't know we couldn't access to some really nice cut blocks.

If you call in this area and you have no answer, it does not means bulls are not coming. Simply because of wolves, they are discrets.

WMU 540

Gas station in Fort Vermillion is closed in Sunday (opened Mon to Sat) so that mean you have to go to High Level to get gas on Sunday.
Tons and tons of wolves there in plateau. The Mac Kenzie National Park keep them close.
The Peace River is your best bet. We talked to an old fellow that said there are a lot of moose along Peace River.
If you road hunt, limited access. Quad is a must.

Overall, wolves are a serious problem there. You need to have a bounty on them. They are everywhere! Slepping can be hard when they haul.

Hope this help you folks !

Default Question

When you say 100kms north, is that Red Earth Creek? How is the quad travel in the areas of 542 you hunted/scouted? We will be in some of those areas in late Nov (I hope). BEL

100 kms North of Slave lake is across from Akituma lake. Pretty much half way between Slave lake and Red Earth Creek. Great quad areas specially there. Check Google Earth and try to get to the big long stretch across from the plant going East.
For quading, really nice cut line and cutblocks along hwy 754 during the first 50 Kms. Watch out for really muddy spot too
