Would you say this here moose was declining to old aged or increase to become mature?

I say declining, but I ain't no expert.

Shot by my son last week. 41 inch. Cleaned all up.

I would estimate at 3 yrs. We shot an "old one" a few years ago, and the antlers were definitely on the down slope. Meat was a little on the "chewy" side, even stewed or slow cooked. The leftovers, when fed to the dogs occupied them for some time, just to get it down!! Only sampling it will tell.

I would say on the uphill as the bases don't have the mass of a bull on the downside.

Some moose just have chitty genetics! They aren't all destined to be big Bulls.

What area was the moose from ?

Yup, you need to look at the teeth. As for the age, up or down, who knows. Genetics and diet play a huge roll in antler growth, the only way to age it is to look and his chompers.

Guessing the age of an animal by the antlers...

Got a picture of a hoof? Might help with the guessing game.

Either way moose down, meat in the freezer

Yeah, just try eating him and you will know! I've shot moose in that size range that were delicious and others that were only fit for the slow cooker or burger, often from the same area. Toughest bull I ever ate was a 40"er I got north of Red Earth, if both his antlers had been the same size as his bigger antler he would have had a much bigger spread though. IMO I see nothing there that would indicate an old bull, should be some prime eating.
