What was the construction if the 129? Bonded or cup and core?

Old thread that I am bringing back to life. OP, did you ever dial in a nice elk round for the Tikka 6.5x55?

I have a few boxes of nosler accubond 140gr that I'll use for deer and then reload. I'd definitely like a little more velocity/flwtter shooting out to 200.

Thanks for anymore experiences that you can all continue sharing in this thread.

Cheers

I have had great success with the 140 partition and H4831sc. I now have the woodleigh 160 gr along with H4831sc to try now. Those things are crazy long

Wow. Shooting a spear out if that barrel. What sort of hunting success did you have with the 140gr partition?

What sort of velocity were you getting with the 140gr round?

Why the change to woodleigh? For fun or hoping for better hunting results?

Thanks for checking in!

I was very happy with the 140's Took a nice black bear, two elk and a nice whitetail buck with them. All were bang/flop. Velocity was around the 2800 fps mark. I could have went higher, but the accuracy was just so great. Not sure why I decided to try the woodleighs, Maybe just curiosity. I think maybe i wanted to shoot a more traditional bullet out of it. I also use this gun for LR target practice with the 142 SMK. The gun is a sako action witha 25" RKS barrel.

6.5's are probably the most popular cartridges in my hunting circle. We have shot just about everything with them. If you are going to push light rounds fast then go with a bonded or monolithic copper. If you are less then 2800fps you can go with a standard cup and core and be just fine, in fact you maybe better off with a more fragile bullet at reduced velocities as they will expand better then the copper bullets like the TSX.

With a 24" barrel and 140's you can expect anywhere from 2700-2900fps depending if it is a modern action and how hard you are pushing it. That being said we have an old mauser that with a max charge of H1000 pushes 140SST's at only 2600 but is devastating on impact.

I have a 16" Ruger compact in .260Rem that send 120's out at only 2725 and have used it on deer and elk. Velocity was too slow for the Barnes TSX at anything past 250 to get real good expansion unless you hit heavy bone. So I switched it out to a 140gr Speer and the terminal performance is far superior. Muzzle velocity is a paltry 2500ish, but don't tell the animals because they keep falling over dead.

I use the Nosler 129 accubond long range and Barnes 127 LRX!at just over 3000 fps. I've also got a great load using the 142 accubond long range using Norma MRP for another one of my 6.5x55 rifles but I ran out of powder :|

I also hunt with 7mm rem mags and have a 375 Ruger for bison up north if I ever get a draw but my 6.5s are my go to rifles.

I primarily shot 140g vlds over rl-22 and h-4831 in my 6.5x284 and 6.5x55 but had an old small ring 98 mauser i put a swedish target rifle barrel on trimmed back to 22" and load the woodleigh 160g over rl-22 makes the little swede into a formidable moose stopper and mine shot those long javelins for bullets very well i found my accuracy with a big jump to the lands the reamer i used had a long throat so it worked out well
