Default What have you built off a T3 Action?

I'm just curious to see what people have made out of a T3 action. I always had this idea that I could build one in 375 Ruger and end up with a gun that weighed more than 2 lbs less than my Ruger Alaskan. If Tikka makes them in 338 WM I don't think it would be a giant stretch to think that it could handle the 375. It might require an additional recoil lug like a Remington style...and obviously a muzzle break.

I built a 6.5-284 off a Tikka 243. I should have used a long action cartridge for the donor and i wouldnt have had to change the bolt stop or mag. My next build off a tikka will be a 257wby.

I would put on a Remington style tombstone recoil lug on when doing a build. This would get away from the tikka setup of the notched receiver. Especially with a big kicker.

Default 6.5x47 Lapua

I have built my 6.5x47 Lapua off the T3 Action. I use a Kreiger MTU contour barrel with a 1/8 twist sitting in a GRS Hybrid Stock. Its my favorite rifle that I have ever owned.

I also put together a 6.5-284 Norma, did mine off a tikka blues 30-06. Put a 24" stainless fluted benchmark barrel on it. Got it shooting the 143gr eldx at 2900 god bery accuratley with zero sign of pressure. It'll be getting put to use in 3 days!

Got a T3 Varmint reamed to 22-250 Ackley. It’s a great rifle.

Default Ill say it

I would never build a large magnum rifle on a Tikka Reciever, they just don't have the material a Remington action does, unless of course accuracy wasn't a big concern then sure. I quite honest can't arrive at a single pro over the Tikka actions Vs Remington (after the Remington has been trued).
Which action in the pic would you want to build a solid rifle from? These two are side by side in our shop for comparison. I am not a Tikka opponent as I've seen them shoot well.

I agree, Tikka is not the best action to use if you want to build a a long action cartridge and shoot long heavy bullets. You will be limited to seating bullets to 3.340" to fit the mag. The other problem with using heavy after market barrels, the majority are 1.250" and the O.D of the Tikka action is 1.200", requiring the barrel needing to be turned down to match the action.

Whatever you decide to do with a Tikka action be sure to build your rifle "on" the action, not "off".

I was about to do a build off a Ruger M77 action this summer,,, I took my time and soon realized it could be done,,, but I decide to go the Remington route just because.

It's up to the person to choose what they like and what they are after.

Sounds like fun what ever path your on, please keep us up todate on the build as I'm always game to see and hear new ideas.

Don

Default Points well made

The reason I choose the Tikka action for my build instead of a Rem was based solely on feel. I just like the buttery smooth feel of there actions. I like the lower bolt throw as well. I have built off Rem actions and they were nice rifles but they just dont have the same feel. I like large optics and I have big hands and I always felt like I was going to rap my knuckles off my scope.

I think you make a good point about the larger calibre builds, I wouldnt do a 338 or other large magnum on the action. With the variety of stocks inleted for the action and the different aftermarket magazines COAL isnt an issue like it is with a factory gun. My Tikka is a 6.5x47 and works wonderfully well. I am not sure I agree with your point on barrels though. Mine is an MTU contour and works well. You cant get much beefier than that contour of barrel.

Default Other choices

Another option is a 3 lug Rem 700 clone. There are a few gun makers that do this and I gave very serious consideration to going this route before I did my Tikka build. I believe there is an action manufacturer in Edmonton that makes a beautiful 3 lug Rem 700 clone. Just cant remember there name right now sorry. That might be a better way to go for what you have in mind.

PS found the name of the company and hear is there web site. KS ARMS

Good info here. I have some interest in this thread also.

How do the actions of Sako 85's compare to Tikka's for a build/semi custom?

There are as many differences between the two as there are similarities.
Actually probably more differences.

The A7 is in the mix at this link but you'll get the picture.

PS- Has anyone chambered a T3 in a 284 Win based cartridge?

If so- which magazine did you use?

They have a tendency to do that....I took one in a trade a while back and within a week I had another one.......maybe it's just gunnutitis.....that's my excuse.

I have had many brownings and remingtons over the years. Replaced them all with Tikkas. 22-250, 243, 6.5x55, 6.5-284, 270win, 270wsm, 300wm. All left hand Tikkas and they all shoot well under an inch with the exception of the 270wsm. I think after i get it bedded and a little more work on load development it will come around.

Tikka are my favourite rifle by far. I only have 2, but both shoot crazy good, and just feel great to handle. Plus, I just have confidence in not getting a Lemon. Funny, my 270wsm off the bench groups around 1/2 moa. First 3 shots out of it cloverleafed. Weird thing, is it only likes cheap ammo. Tried 4 types. And Fusion, and Federal blue box shot way better than tsx and other high priced rounds.
I just picked up a box off 140 accubonds. I also read somewhere, the lubolox coated bullets, don't shoot that good after running copper bullets through. Don't know if that's true. Spring I'll see how some others shoot. Plus, just starting to reload. So we'll see how that goes.

But for the price, can't beat a tikka. Especially when you find a 270wsm SS on for 650$

I have a soft spot for 375s, I had a Safari Classic 700 in 375 H&H for a while but sold it to get my 375 Ruger Hawkeye which I really like but don't like the weight. I've had a number of 700's over the years and I am no fan of Remingtons, even though I know it's a good product. I've had a number of Tikka and Sako guns and prefer them above all others, which is what got me thinking about building one in 375 Ruger.
