Thumbs up still water / lake fly fishing

Hey Guys,

I had posted a while back asking about reels and got a ton of help, I really appreciate it! For those interested I went Lamson Konic 2 and love it!

I am headed to Kelowna this weekend (if we can get there) and I'm going to be fishing a lake. This will be my first weekend spent on a lake with a fly rod. I'm working off the assumption to read the lake similarly to the way I always have (with spin gear). If I'm out to lunch please let me know.

My big question to you guys is on presentation of flies on a lake. I've done my research to be comfortable with when to fish dry and when to fish below surface but are there any big differences to being on a lake? Are there flies in my river box that are useless on still water? Is there one I probably don't own but should?

Also my fishing partner/girlfriend says she hates casting a fly line with an indicator on it. (hard or soft) so I've been doing a little research and some guys like to use a chironie or a leech under a dry fly instead of an indicator... I don't know too much about this set up can anyone help out with a yay or a nay? I've never tried it and wondered if it would help her cast a little easier!?

Thirdly, thanks in advance guys I am pumped to be out on the water this weekend. I've fallen in love with the fly rod and can't wait to report back.

Well, just have her fish naked!!

And by that I mean without an indi (get your minds out of the gutter boys!!)!

No problems with fishing without an indi, or get her to put on a sinking line and a small streamer and she can strip all day long (again guys, minds out of the gutter!)! LoL

Depending on what lakes you are fishing bass would be taking streamers and poppers, etc. I would think!!

Enjoy!

P

You can't use 2 flies at one time in BC (no "hopper dropper").

You can use a long leader and no indicator with a floating line. Just cast and then count (usually 2-3X in seconds to what the depth of the water is). Then slowly retrieve.

Full sink, sink tip, clear intermediate lines also available to fish under the surface.

I use a full sink line for about 80% of my lake fishing.

You can also use two rods at the same time from a boat in BC, as well!
Regs are online.

Stop by Troutwaters fly & tackle in Kelowna. Great group of people and they will point you to lakes in the area

If you are the only person in the boat, otherwise one rod per licensed angler.
