Default Broken ankle

My son broke his ankle last night during his soccer game, does this mean his hunting season is over? Somebody mentioned exceptions for handicapped hunters, not sure if this applies to him or not or even what that means, anybody have any info?

I wouldn't say it's doe. You may just have to modify your methods.

Call the fish cops. AFAIK, you need dr's note and he should be able to hunt as 'disabled' until he mends - shoot off ATV (or whatever it means in AB, I don't recall, so read the regs). Full and speedy recovery to your son.

For the disabled hunter application, the basic requirement is that it needs to be a permanent disability, not a temporary injury. Take a read here:

My sympathy to your son. A broken ankle is miserable. Be prepared for a 12 week recovery. My wife broke hers in June and was only able to return to normal work in September.

No, a broken ankle would not get him a "Disabled" permit.

Why would he want that permit for anyways?
Did you give him a novelty pool noodle for his birthday?

Just teasing'.....

Crutches make a great shooting rest. He will do just fine.

My friend is paralyzed from the waist down and uses his legs as a 3rd crutch. He has hunted deer, elk, bear and waterfoul. There is absolutely no reason your son can't post somewhere with you.

Hope he heals well.

Pretty though to negotiate a cut line in the snow with crutches. Wrapped up or not.

The smartest thing your son can do is stay off that ankle and let it heal properly so he don't suffer the rest of his life with a screwed ankle, Tell me how I know, he can always hunt again next year.

Yes, I am thinking this is the best advice, it's toUgh though to watch his heart break, his two favourite things to do in the this world are soccer and hunting.

Set him up in a good ambush point .... be willing to help with the work if he connect's .... no sence missing the season if family and friend's are willing to help ....some of the best hunter's in the the world move slow ... just might expand his way of thinking ... He will learn more trying than sitting on his duff waiting for next year !!!

I have three different ambush sites we set up in early October, the problem is getting him in there, no worries on the work, that's the least of my issues, might have to place him closer to the road then I first planned.

Can you pull him in on a game cart or otter type sled if snow?

I broke my ankle in September. The permit from fish and wildlife is only for permanent disabilities. I highly recommend the I-walk 2.0!
I am out of mine if you are interested

I've done exactly that. It was foolish and I should of sat the hunt out. He's got lots of life left and plenty of time for hunting.

Had That happen to my boy a couple years ago

it was 1 minute into his cow Elk draw on opening day

when he said .... dad on the left cow Elk coming out

3 more followed ...we sat in the truck and watched them

I said too bad you broke your ankle two weeks ago hey

2 days later in same spot 47 minutes after daylight 6 cow Elk and a 5X5 Bull walk out ..it was a 6 point zone .. I had the bull Elk tag

its even worse when your younger bro got his cow Elk 17 minutes into the Hunting season few years before

but he healed and was out today hunting with his buddy Priceless

some times taking care of your body is the most important thing

It's a balance, don't put yourself in a situation to damage the ankle so that there are long term complication but if he can get out there, sit, shoot, have dad do all the grunt work...back home that's a double bonus!

sorry about your son best to let him heal .. talk about watching his heart break , my sister had her home hit with a rifle bullet an they caught the guy and his kid {shooter} . Narrowly missed hitting her as she stepped from the car . Called warden and he sent RCMP , while cop was there the kids dad shows up with a written apology from the boy who was too distraught to face her . She is a hunter too , and lucky for th boy she dropped all charges

That sucks. What sort of "exceptions"" are you looking for?

I have a broken leg and know how it feels to be immobilized during hunting season. The special provisions for people with disabilities applies only to people with permanent disabilities. Thinking about it I am glad that's the way it is, as this is the type of thing that could and would be abused.

How bad is the break? Is taking the quad and finding a good spot to sit not an option?

My break is not good. A horse fell on me and rolled over top of me on June 25th. Tibia and fibula both badly broken and required surgery to install two plates and screws, also fractured clavicle. Was confined to bed and wheel chair for three months and now I am on crutches.
