Saw-whet owl?
This little guy just flew into our sliding glass door while we were eating. He was laying face down on the deck. By the time I grabbed some gloves he was standing and flew off when I opened the door. Bad pic, but he took off before we could get another one. We think it’s a Saw-whet owl?

Very cool! I was shocked when I looked down to see what hit the glass!

Yup, definitely a Northern Saw-whet Owl. Did you perhaps check for a metal band on it's leg?

Never got a chance unfortunately. It came to, and flew away into the night.

Saw one of these owl's this summer while doing some trail maintenance in the Battle River valley. It seemed laid back, went past it (about 10 feet away) with a couple of brush cutters running and it didn't take off, just watched us go by. The closest I have ever been to an owl in the wild.

I’ve seen a large resident owl that lives in town, but had no idea these little guys were even around. Very neat little bird. Weird that it would fly into my door at night. We have a large spruce maybe 10’ from the door so it must’ve been perched in there maybe. We have a bunch of feeders in that tree so I’m wondering if it was targeting the smaller birds? Cool none the less. Hope to see more of them!

Sure hope he’s ok, a lot of times the poor buggers don’t live after hitting a window. I read it damages their brain or something to that effect and they die during the night. Maybe the bigger birds do better?

On a scale of owl cuteness, they are at the top.

Hope so. He stood there for a bit after he came to. Then when I slid the screen open he flew away before I could check him over.

Saw-whet Owls are primarily nocturnal hunters and often hang around bird feeders to prey on mice that are attracted to the spilled bird seeds.
