Default Lost engine temp. gauge in my truck

My 2006 V10 F250 engine light came on followed by the Tow/Haul light blinking and the "Check Gauges" light came on, and sure enough my engine temp gauge/needle isn't working. The truck runs perfectly fine so I'm thinking it's a sender unit or switch or something like that. Any idea what I should be looking for and is this an easy DIY? I've changed out oil pressure switches, inline fuel pumps and filters, etc. but would by no means consider myself "gifted" at wrenching....

Thanks for any help.

Might be a temp fix but unhook the batteries and that would reset the computer. Might work might not. I'd try that first.

If it works and happens again, then you have a problem.

Check coolant level. Do you have heat coming out of the ducts? My coolant temp gauge went in my '03 (no message board though) and you had to replace the dash cluster.

I'm pretty sure it's the sender unit or whatever the part is called that sends info. to the engine temp. gauge on the dash. It works for the first few minutes and then the needle just drops while all other gauges still work fine.

There's got to be a part that transmits engine temp. to the gauge that is failing. The truck runs perfectly with no noticeable issues whatsoever...

Coolant level is good and coolant temp gauge is working and showing normal temps.

Not familiar with your model of truck but engine temp and coolant temp gauge is the same thing. Maybe it the trans temp gauge? You mentioned a tow/haul light?

Thanks JM and RWM for the link. Yes, it's the transmission temp gauge and looks like a transmission senor so will drop the pan and do the filters at the same time.
