Default A Grown Up Discussion on Marijuana

Hey guys. I started a thread this morning asking about investing in Marijuana stocks. My wife lost her job of 20 years just before Christmas, and has a bit of money that will be coming out of the pension fund she was in that we will need to invest. I know a few guys who got on the pot bandwagon at various points in the rollercoaster ride, with some doing better than others. Anyhow, the thread quickly got derailed by guys who had things to say about marijuana, just not the investing aspect. That's okay though as it is a forum, and I got the info I was looking for.

Anyhow, I saw that there were guys who wanted to discuss pot, and being it is every bit as legal as a bottle of scotch, I thought I would start the thread off.

A little about myself. I was a big drinker in my younger days who came from parents who were bigger drinkers. My father drank himself to death when I was 24, and my mother left us when I was 10 because there were parties that beckoned. I quit drinking after my father's death, as I knew I needed to for my future. Been dry for a quarter of a century. All of that to say I am well acquainted with booze.

My first thoughts when I heard about legalization were that it was crazy. I have changed my mind. Many people I know have received considerable relief from conditions that saw very little relief with prescription meds. I have also had the occasion to speak with people who once hid their use of weed. Man was I surprised at how many there are in that group. The constant refrain was that when people use pot they chill out, play video games, and eat potato chips as opposed to going out to the bar, getting in fights with strangers and loved ones, and waking up with a hangover. That jived with my experience too. I have also seen that the sky hasn't seemed to fall since weed was legalized either.

I'd be interested in hearing your views, particularly if they changed one way or the other since legalization.

Please keep the discussion civil. Smart people can vigorously disagree without resorting to insults.

I enjoy an occasional drink or two. I can have a few glasses of wine or a half of bottle of vodka, all depends on what I have to eat with that. You can call it a Russian tradition, I guess, lol!
As for pot, my personal look at this is the same as tobacco. I don’t use it, never had and most likely never will. I can enjoy an occasional cigar.
Wife doesn’t smoke or uses pot either. My sister is a pharmacist and she is very negative towards pot. She says it will show more side effects in the future.

Like many things bad for some people. Gotta have it. Gotta be high all the time. Changes who you are.
Good for some people. Nice party. Good pain relief. Escape from reality

Medical Mary Jane has made my hip pain bearable (barely), I cannot imagine how I would cope without it. As for recreation, I don't do it. But I worked at a hard partying place in my twenties, I drove a lot of people home. The stoners were fun to be around, the drunks not so much. If legalization keeps people off of alcohol and harder drugs it's a win for me.

I drink.
I don’t use pot.
I think pot is 1000% better than using alcohol.
But I’ve always known this.
Nothing new. Nothing’s changed.

Marijuana for medical use is not the same stuff as marijuana for recreational use. Apples and oranges, they are not equals to be laundered together for the benefit of one lending support to the other.

If my doctor thought the medical variety would be beneficial for pain relief I suspect I may use it. I do not nor do I intend to use the recreational stuff. I gave up tobacco 30 years ago...…...my lungs are clear and pink and I want to die with them that way. And the edibles thing doesn't resound with me either. If I want a buzz I'll have a couple beer or couple glasses of wine. I'm done with going full tilt on anything that messes with me.

I spent most of my life in the military and I wasn't in any fringe that were users.

I'll respect anyone that uses it, until they don't show any respect themselves.

I think you hit the the nail on the head with the future effects of weed. I'm not against it in the least, but now that it is legal we will be able to accurately study the longterm effects on users. As was previously mentioned there has always been a large group that used the product but kept it quiet. That had the effect of making any information on how it effects peoples health completely inaccurate. We are now at ground zero for research on pot, and it will take decades to know what the real long term effects are.

Why do you think medical Mary Jane is not the same as recreational?

Iv'e tried it on occasion in my youth and enjoyed it. Now, can't stand it. Makes me feel paranoid. Of my circle, very few are regular users and remain so after legalization. It's not for everyone unlike booze which more enjoy i'm sure. The 3 years prior to legalization was the best time to invest in the pot bubble. The stocks have declined since, even the mighty Aurora has a chance to become insolvent! Last place I would put my money is in cannabis stocks right now. If tensions get worse in the middle east, some of the beaten down Canadian oil/gas company producers will be a safe gain from the current undervalues. Gold producers if the SHTF economically with all the Gov't/consumer debt finally drives a full blown depression.

The intent of medical marijuana is to relieve pain not to get high. Don't know what strain/compound of med marijuana you are using but if it's strictly a CBD or CBN compound, you're not going to get high. Recreational users are all about THC compound.....the compound that gets you high. Medical marijuana may contain zero THC or varying amounts but the thing is without CBD/CBN it's useless as a medication.

I tried straight CBD oil, it had no effect. I talked to my counselor and she recommended a CBD-THC mix. That helped quit a bit. I now take .8ml of 10/10 and .3ml of THC at bedtime. I don't take it during the day because I am afraid I would be impaired. I think you have some preconceived notions about medical MJ, and what works for people. Medical MJ is NOT strictly CBD, and I was told by my counselor that MOST people need a mixture for pain relief. CBD is mostly an anti inflammatory, a mixture of both is used for pain relief.

I have no preconceived notions. I said in my post that medical marijuana may contain varying amounts of THC. I'm glad that it works for you

I have maybe a dozen drinks a year. Had my fair share in my younger years.

Tried the pot a few times but was never my thing. Made me very paranoid. The one time was a very hot day while hiking and I kept thinking the sweat in my crack wasn't sweat, freaked me out that I might stink if I passed someone so I had to go off trail and bushwack my way out of there. For those that are thinking "why didn't he stop and check?" well I did but ten steps later all friction was lost and I thought IT had happened. Horrible experience, didn't touch the stuff for years after that.

I would try some of the new fancy stuff but some of the places I work at still require a clean test before being allowed on location. Not worth the risk for me until that changes.

Never tried the stuff. If it tastes anything like it smells I don’t know how people do it in the first place. If I lived the first 40 years without it I doubt I will start now, even if Trudeau says it’s legal.

That said, I do believe there are far worse thins out there and in some sense that includes alcohol. However, I also think the reason some people are tempted to try it, especially young people is because it’s a taboo. When you take that away from marijuana, what is the new thrill the new taboo to try? Coke? Heroin? Meth?

Legal weed has cost a few of my co-workers their jobs; that's all I need to know about it.

I suffer from chronic pain, i take 90 percocet a month. Ive tried since legalization to find a replacement, all the "experts" have the strain, this will take away your pain, give you energy, blah blah blah. Ive tried easy over 100 different strains, cbd, thc, smoked, edibles, etc. Still have not found this miracle strain. Easy not to feel pain when your hiding in the bathroom in the fetal position scared and paranoid. 3 percs a day, and my benefits cover it.

Over the past 45 years of adult life I have known both... only alcohol consumers and only pot smokers.

Objectively speaking..

The drinkers I know have consumed alcohol regularly, some that drink alone and some that drink socially. Sadly over those years I have known several people that have pickled themselves to death or physically handicapped themselves with alcohol consumption now in later life. Many of the drinkers have rocky relationships and are fairly sedentary.

And I know pot users, some who have consumed pot to the extreme of daily consumption like coffee for 40+ years. Some smoke alone and some smoke socially. After 40+ years of chronic use all of the pot smokers seem no worse for wear, many still active and living interesting lives. They have good relationships and engage in society and creativity. Many are very able physically and have less maladies than the drinkers.

Alcohol in excess leads to the uncontrollable urge to listen for buffalo beside the toilet bowl.

Marijuana in excess leads to carpentry or going fishing.
~~~
Investment wise I think a person should look outside the box a bit. Presently I don't know how many tons of pot are being grown in Alberta legally. I do know that there is no place to process the plant stalks in Alberta. It is also a reason there isn't more hemp farmers. No where to process the fiber. I think researching and investing in some kind of a hemp & pot fiber textile company in western Canada could pay dividends more consistently. Definitely a industry in its infancy.
Oil use good for some but not all. Making cookies good. I like em when made right. Smoking not so good at all. Cough, cough, cough but not all do. THC 27% awesome high. CBD high count with some THC small to mid count. Eases body and joint pain, limited high. Still and has always been experimental drug. Maybe put on this earth for a reason. Unlike the side affects you could get from prescription drugs. As far as investing, personally I think it's too late unless the edibles really take off. I think they will cause no smell and you can get head stone or body stone. Just My opinion and experience. Oh damn my outside voice again.
I don’t use, but it has baffled me with the amount of refinement that goes into spirits and less so with beer or wine, as compared to just a simple plant. This has me scratching my head as to which is better for you. I’m not naive to think the plants them selves haven’t been breed or genetically modified to be more potent. But I think it’s like tomatoes its just going to be modified. In the end it’s still just a plant.
I'm not going to go into pot usage.
As for the stocks, I'd consider them to be overbought and perhaps due for a correction. Maybe day trading those stocks, sure. But for a buy, hold, and forget type of investment, I don't consider them a viable option.
Investing in the retail side of pot might be worth it. As in investing in a pot dispensary. But, that has to be done very carefully as well.
If buying stocks, I'd prefer to get into companies that have more asset value than market cap, or even better, more cash money in the bank than market cap. What I see is a lot of companies have market cap values of many many times higher than the assets they have. These stocks are based on hype. Hype stocks grow in price very fast, but fall just as fast. That's what I see most pot stocks as currently. An exception to this might be medical pot where the parent company is a pharmaceutical company.
So, if you're wanting to play hype stocks, you have to get in when they're penny stocks, and sell when the hype if fever pitch. You never know when the music stops. So, you have to sell when people are still buying. And preferably buying like madmen.
Maybe investments in insurance companies, or casinos would be better.
I used to be a pretty heavy drinker, bordering on alcoholic. I started drinking in my teens for fun and later as an adult to help cope with the pain of arthritis and peripheral neuropathy. I smoked a bit of weed as a teen too but not much, I enjoyed drinking more.
When I finally found a few good doctors that were able to properly diagnose my ailments and also with the help of good meds and a drastic change in diet, I'm doing much better but not 100% pain free.
I had to quit drinking because of the meds I take. They're hard enough on the liver that I have to go for regular blood work and biannual liver biopsies.
So, I decided to give legal pot a go. I use a dry herb vape pen and only use it in the evening when I know I won't be doing anything or going anywhere.
Which brings me to a major reason I use it. I also drank a lot to help shut my brain off to go to sleep. Even some pretty strong prescription sleeping pills were starting to lose effectiveness.
The pot relaxes me and helps my brain from going a hundred miles an hour at night and makes me sleepy.
I will admit that I enjoy the feeling of getting high sometimes though.
I don't pretend to think that smoking weed is good for me, but it's better than consuming a bottle of vodka a night or 24 beer on the weekend.
It's also a lot cheaper than drinking!
Having said all that, I'd love to crack open a bottle of vodka right now! lol
But, I've been off booze for five years now, best to leave that dog sleeping.
Tried it in my youth a couple of times, but not a believer. A lot of hype that will come to nought. The market is over saturated with producers, no way around it. Here we probably have 8 or ten in this county area alone and more on the way. The latest is one to be built in the industrial park at the intersection of H 22 and 27, just down the road from me. Sundre even has one. A major political consideration in Olds right now is the smell escaping from one plant , enveloping the town. People are not happy. Government pot is over priced, one article referred to 8. gm pot as opposed to 3. from the black market. Then there's the "Grey" market, as it is euphemistically referred to. That's the pot that originates from Native reserves, in Ontario and Quebec, very open and the government wouldn't touch that with a 100 meter pole.
Ive never used any illegal drugs. Never used pot either
Dont care what others do as long as it doesnt affect their work or my relationship with them.
I dont equate "legal" with "ok" which means I feel the same about alcohol.
Everything in moderation.
IMO the pot investing train has already left the station. I've worked to hard for my money to roll the dice in this arena.
I was just like SNS2 when I heard weed was coming out to be legal, but I think now after all I read about it if it helps you out with chronic pain or other aliments why the hell not.
Our guarantee in life starts to expire after our first breath, so make life as enjoyable as possible, but again in moderation. I use to smoke in the 70's but I also like to drink so I dropped the weed and kept the booze.
The last 25 years I have cut back by 95 percent of my drinking,but the odd night I still like to go out on the town and let it ride and have fun., but in moderation.My wife knows that if I am gone more then 72 hours come looking.
Lots guys say if I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of my health, then there's others that do every thing right and are given 30 days to live,so at least with my body I won't feel short changed when I am dying ,I pretty well have worn out 2 bodies so there will be no regret .
SNS2 you know I have been to hell and back with my accident then my brain hemorrhage that I over came, so my night's on the town and going missing is something I wish I could do ,but I can't.
And yes I may end up on the weed piils or whatever, but if I can get a clean bill of health the odd night on the town is good for the soul and my wife comes along with me.haha
Cheers
