Unhappy Walleye Tags not sticking together

Anyone else noticing that this years walleye tags come unglued after being in the water for only a short period of time?

Guys have been commenting about this for years now.

I would just take a cooler with ice and put them straight on ice. Better quality meat that way too.

ever year they would fall off in the livewell. then the game warden would say they were not tagged , the wife would tell him they were , and he would find it in the livewell , white livewell and the paper was green one side and white on the other.

Yep! That is what I have planned to tonight. Fill the cooler with ice, catch 6 class B wallies from Pigeon, enjoy a good fry

I've never had a tag fall off when placed in the ice cooler yet.

I've always just had the fish on a stringer beside the boat and this is the first year it's been a problem. ( 5 of 6 fish)

My parents and grandparents were out this past weekend and all their tags besides 2 came off the wire. And it was within an hour of being in the bucket of water. They’ve never had issues previous years.

I was discussing this with a member of this forum a few years ago, according to the letter of the law, it does not specify the tags can only be used once (of course this is implied though). The fish just need to be tagged according to the regs so if your tags end up being reusable..........
Not that I support this and hopefully the regs have been updated since.

This has happened to me every year since the new tags came in. Good idea with the cooler and ice but should we have to carry around an extra cooler? How about coming out with some decent tags that don't fall off?

Because its a way for the government to make money. I wonder how many tickets are issued each year because the tags fall off?

A stapler sounds like it would be handy.

The tags we used this year had no problems. All stayed on in the live well for more than 4hours. I did get mine direct from F & W and they may have been left overs from a previous year though.

The regs say "Tagging instructions
A walleye that is retained must be tagged immediately through the gill cavity and mouth with a paper tag and wire. To tag your walleye refer to the instructions on the tag."

The Walleye special licence tagging instructions say "TAGGING INSTRUCTIONS
A walleye that is retained must be tagged immediately
through the gill cavity and mouth with the paper tag and
wire provided with the Special Walleye Licence.
To tag your walleye:
Spread the ends of the wire loop slightly apart
and insert an end into one side of the mouth, pushing
it back toward the gill opening on the same side until
it protrudes out from the gill cover.
Note: you may have to squeeze the wire ends
close together again.

Remove the backing from the adhesive paper tag.

Place the open end of the wire loop flat against one
half of the adhesive side of the tag and fold the
other half over, so that the adhesive sides are
pressed together evenly and firmly, with the
wire secured between.
Note: the open portion of the wire loop must be
completely covered by the tag."

Neither place mentions you must kill the fish first only that you must tag immediately.

I always put the wire through and then give it a twist, this takes any pressure off the tag....never lost one yet.
