So, can someone give me the Coles notes on this? Seems the Metis nation now has access to the entire province north of Red Deer.

Any reason why this can not be changed once we get a proper Gov in charge?

As with any agreement made with one government, it can change with the next government.

With the scandal coming out of the Kenney camp I'd hold off on talks of a gov change. Pizzes me right off. Are they all corrupt?

From what I see metis harvesting rights won't be decided upon by f&w anymore. The zones wont be restricted to 160km distance of ones settlement.

Instead of needing a harvesting rights paper from fish and wild life metis will need their metis card with the proper zones that they have rights to.

What's not clear is the specific area each metis person will be able to hunt. For example one metis settlement over laps into 2 zones based on the website so will those metis be able to hunt both zones?? Sonto answer your question no they dont have access to half the province. Definitely a bigger area but far from entire province.

A friend is asking how his current harvesting rights change so I can confirm tomorrow if hes restricted to one or two zones tomorrow.

And on the topic of a govt changing the rules.. these changes have been in the works for maybe 10 years. Ndp didnt start these consultations, they just happen to be the ones in power for the signing of things.

FWIW... Somehow, it was my understanding that treaties are/were drawn up and agreed upon my both parties, for the benefit of both as well. There are those out there, that do not like Donald Trump..BUT.. where he saw treaties, that were unbalanced and unfair for his people, he had the other party sit down and even the playing field.....that's right....HE TORE THEM UP...(the treaties)
When will our politicians set a set ....and set things straight for the 21st century.

I Keep trying unsuccessfully to interpret this to mean my wife who's settlement is technically Manitoba, can now shoot that cow moose that ate every Saskatoon bush on my property here in Northern Alberta. If someone could highlight that passage, I would appreciate it.

When will the coddling of this society stop.
From what I can see is 5000 Métis living on actual settlements and 100,000 more registered that can now hunt and fish year round
I am sure more will come crawling out of the woodwork with their newly appointed rights.

Wildlife is a limited resource, non renewable if exploited too severely and not managed properly. Enough said.

Grizz
X2

Well the Métis did play a major roll in eliminating the bison on the Canadian prairies. That’s a documented fact.

On another note I wonder how these rules would ever be managed in a responsible fashion.?

They won’t be managed. Long as you got a sticker on your card, fish and feathers will turn a blind eye just like with the treaty First Nations.
It’s a political mess to interfere.

It's very clearly laid out that your settlement must reside in Alberta and you must have very clear contact with current settlement.

You do not need contact with your settlement. Just a contemporary connection to your harvesting area. Which means your current address and your originating settlement in the same harvesting area, then that’s is the harvesting area you designated.

More posturing from the current government for votes is all that is.

Coming from a metis guy, this whole sky is falling theory is getting old. To most metis in those areas, it wont change much. Sure there may be a few bad apples that will take this overboard, but that already happens with a few within the current fn agreement. But it also happens with a few that are not effected by these agreements.

Don't forget that MOST everyone that enjoys the outdoors, and hunting or fishing, wouldn't want to see its resources depleted. We are all stewards of the land.

Also, although I do not agree with the apparent lack of agreement for the southern part of the province (thanks phillips for wanting to protect your "parks") this is more than just a provincial agreement. The supreme court of Canada has deemed it a constitutional right for metis. This means that although this agreement could get changed, or scrapped for a period of time, there will always be another.

For the most part I would agree with you baticus but I'll play devils advocate here. In eastern Ontario there are bands/settlements with 100k members who are all new within the last 5 to 8 years.

They are taking membership from anyone and everyone. If that happens here it will be a problem.

I'm mostly concerned with how Metis nation of Alberta will keep it so people aren't gaming the system. My guess is that it will become a total crap shoot.

R3illy, I understand your point. This should only be the start of the agreement. The metis nation of alberta should come out with some rules and/or guidelines that its members should abide by. It shouldn't turn into a free for all.

This agreement is not worth a hill of beans to the largest % of the Alberta Metis population. It is more pomp and circumstance geared at vote's for the NDP.
By the time the majority of Metis realize they have been left out of this agreement it will be to late and they will have voted. Links to these 4 area's have to be proven to have existed prior to 1900 and then that only allows harvesting in that area.

all MNA members have already proven their genealogy pre 1900. all they need now is current address in the area in which their settlement is located.
