Default Cooked or uncooked shrimp as bait

As ice fishing season is approaching fast just wondering everyone's take on using cooked or uncooked shrimp for bait? I'd like to try using it (where allowed) for trout, perch, etc and just wondering what the general consensus is of people that regularly use shrimp as bait while ice fishing?

I've used both - with pretty much equal results. Getting a cooked shrimp ring seems like the easiest solution ussually.

I've also tried the canned shrimp (the small salad shrimp) and it simply crumbles on the hook.

I like to use uncooked with the shell on. I have no proof of it but I think it would stay on the best.

Anyone ever try to salt / brine your bait? It makes it a lot more durable to stay on hooks.

I haven't tried with the shell on but cooked stays on better then uncooked because it has a more solid rubbery consistency.

I usually take cooked, the cheap shrimp rings are good and if the fish aren't biting I get a tasty snack!

I used to buy a cooked shrimp ring and tip my perch hooks with a small chunk of shrimp.

I use fresh shrimp, and before I drop the hook, I heat a part of it for about 5 to 10 sec, with a lighter! Fresh shrimp seem to stay on the hook a bit better!

Upon reading other threads, I will edit! I will have to try both cooked and uncooked to see which works best for staying on the hook, it was always my thought that uncooked would work better, however I never tried both, on the same trip! Stay tuned!!!

I dig a hole and look for freshwater shrimp. If and when they boil to the surface with the ice chips, I scoop them out with a screen strainer. They seem to work better for me than anything else, including maggots, for perch or trout.

I can't wait for 4" of ice! I use cooked shrimp and a salmon egg for rainbows. Great success so far!

I have tried the raw and the cooked and found they work about the same but the cooked is way easier to keep on the hook.

Canned shrimp also work well and they are small so you can use the whole shrimp. Works good for perch.

I’ve never heard of people using shrimp as bait for ice fishing. But I have caught many Catfish using Shrimp left out a day. I’ve also heard of some fisherman tipping there ice fishing rigs with pieces of perch. I still don’t think nothing beats a Minnow or Worm to start.

Cheers
