I'm not sure about boat rentals, but Wabamun is a good shot for pike. I haven't shore fished it yet, but I'm sure somebody here can chime in soon and let you in on where to go on shore.
Coal Lake is another good one for pike, and shore fishing there is pretty decent as well.
Sucks your buddies bailed on you guys...I hope you manage to get out somewhere and get into some fish!
