Best advice right here ,everything in life can change on a dime .Death or fights doesn't matter with who or what ,cover your butt either way .

Your inlaws maybe great folks ,but if for some reason they leave this earth early ,land needs be in your name for you and your families safety.

Your wife has a job and a decent salary. Good. You can all move to another place where she can get a better salary. Good. You can be an at home dad for now. That's ok. When you get better you can find a job where you won't deteriorate your health. Any extra money you have can go into your kids education funds. Don't, I repeat don't, throw any extra money you may have into the deep black hole of farm expenses on some flimsy expectation of profit returns. I have put a lot of off farm salary money into that black hole but I own the land and will get it back when I sell and I'm at a point where I'm just as ready to sell as that Argo I got rid of last week. Even if you have signed agreements, it could take years to get it through courts if things go sideways.

Is this the first time everyone on an AO post agrees? Holy smokes…I came up with an idea that bad….

Consider my head firmly removed from my hindquarters.

We just had a long talk and it’s not gonna happen. Thanks guys

Just to balance the scales, know of a case that worked the other way.
Farmer’s daughter married a butcher, farmer set him up on the quarter right next to the home quarter with a house and state of the art butcher shop.
5 or 6 years pass, divorce happens and butcher get to keep the house, the shop, and the whole quarter!
Farmer is still mad about it 20 years later.

No problem one of AO’s greatest attributes is pointing out when you are doing something wrong

Did not express an opinion earlier, figured there were lots that would, but I can say, I strongly congratulate you on the decision you made. One of the fastest ways to burn up a ton of cash is to become a farmer, it is also a great deal of hard and very physical work that does not get easier as you get older. There does seem to be so MANY better options to achieve what you are trying for. Best of luck going forward.

I have a good friend that built on his parents place. As mentioned numerous times here as things in life change, if you don’t own the land it makes it very tough. You can’t use the equity in your home to purchase a new home if you need to move if you don’t own the land.

As it gets into family dynamics things can change in a hurry.

I think you guys made a wise choice.

Dang, could have made a good reality show of the experience. Already thinking of all kinds of mishaps that could be scripted in.

Own the land you live on, especially if you put money into it like building a house....you will get screwed
Best advice , let it sink in, too many gators around that farm.
