Substantial recoil without brake, extremely loud with brake. So loud with brake that you must never fire a single shot without hearing protection.or risk permanent hearing damage.I find ear plugs and muffs needed to comfortably shoot gun with brake.Slightly flatter shooting than 300wby ,or 300win mag,but with greatly reduced barrel life.Very expensive factory loads and brass. It would be a very poor choice for a one gun hunter, because the cost of shooting it will result in most people never practicing with it.If you don't practice with the gun,you will never be able to take advantage of the slightly flatter trajectory.

you need bigger than that, that just won't do.lol...what are you hunting sasquatch...just kidding if your thinking 30-378,why not 338-378 way better but your goin to need powder by the keg if you reload,if not factory rounds i think are around $120 a box of 20,brass is no cheaper, but if you want to shoot the elite of the elite i guess money doesnt matter,,,enjoy...p.s.i want one too love those accumarks

You will need a custom barrel a least 28 in. long if you want to handload some hot ammo. Most factory barrels that are 26 in., seem to be not long enough to burn up all that powder.

i have both a 30-378 and a 300RUM and have found the weatherby ammo to not measure up to the claim over a chronograph. The claimed velocity is 3450 with a 180gr bullet but I have yet to see the chronograph break the 3300 mark. That being said the velocity stated is achieveable with a .300 rum with a 26" barrel vs. the weatherby's 28. Dont get me wrong I like both calibers but unless you love weatherby calibers it might not be worth the $140 a box ammo and $60 a box brass to you. When similar ballistics can be had with cheaper ammo/brass prices. The thing that you will find when you get a 30-378 is what I call range rage (everyone is ****ed at you even if you have the brake off since the muzzle blast is so ridiculous) and cartridge envy. Many will come on with a WTF look on their face and want to touch your weatherby mortar round LOL. Good luck with your voyage and maybe consider the .338-378 if you are going with accumark as the price is nearly identical and they do have brakes on them so recoil will be similar.

The Weatherby only has 26" of barrel, the extra 2" is the muzzle brake, which doesn't add any velocity.

There are many better calibers on the market, along with many better rifles than what Weatherby builds. The Wbys are pretty to look at but are not reknowned for fabulous accuracy.
Fast bullets are nice , but accurate shots are better.

If we may inquire why the need for bigger thunder? What is the game plan?

Unless you're dealing with a custom or semi-custom rifle built around a Wby cartridge and action. The 340Wby cartridge is ballistically very close to the venerable 338LM, but still civilized enough that a muzzle brake isn't mandatory - especially if the package is pushing 20 lbs.

Shrinking the freebore, tightening up the tolerances, lengthening the barrel, and backing off a wee bit from factory loadings produces a very nice long-distance 250gn projectile from a 340 rifle. I expect it to be at least as consistent as the TRG42 seems to be, and shouldn't 'burn out' barrels quite as fast.

I'd image that a massive, custom receiver (Barnard? Stolle -Kodiak?) could have a bit of an edge over a tweaked Mark V action, but I'd have to see test results to believe significantly better accuracy in a 600 meter hunting rig.

Absolutly love mine its a nice shooting gun as stated a little loud with the brake and factory shells are not cheap. I went with the 30-378 instead of the 338-378 for bullet selection, well at least factory bullets as i do not reload. You can buy 130gr right up to 225gr factory shells where as the 338-378 is limited to 200gr and 225gr factory loads.

The brake really reduces recoil though as i have the same accumark in a 257 also and to me the 257 kicks a bit harder than my 30-378 with the brake on.
