Default 410 Gauge (I know, I know)

Who is shooting a .410 and what model are you shooting? What are you shooting with it and what shells?

I have always loved the .410 for grouse and rabbits. Quite a common shotgun home in Newfoundland. I have found that .410's seem to be less common here in Alberta and a little more pricey. No doubt the popularity of the .410 in Newfoundland was aided by the ban on .22 cal rifles for hunting for many years (changes about 4 years ago to allow .22's)

Anyhow,...what model and shells guys?

I have had a few SxS's and one O/U as well as numerous singles and bolts.

Right now I own only one .410 and it's the Yildiz folder break...

I don't use it a lot as the novelty and enjoyment of .22 hunting is still there for me....

I have a little SXS double .410. I use it for grouse hunting, especially when shooting "from, along, across a road..." where a .22 is not to be used.

I like 7 1/2 shot when I can get it but have used #4. It is some odd ball Spanish made gun I picked up at an auction.

I tried shooting slugs through it to see what kind of "bear medicine" it would be but was not impressed.

Why did you add the (I know, I know)???

YOu are bang on. See what I did there?

12guage with slugs is jsut too much for shooting around the house, unless you want to with out a dout end someone, and possibly anyone else in the house.

My sister loves her 410

It's a .410 bore...not gauge. Some people love correcting that...

I use a 410 occasionally , I have two, a FAIR Jubilee O/U and a very old Stevens 311 SXS that was my Grand father's gun.
They are both great guns, but I prefer a SXS to O/U.

Most of the shooting i do with it this days is skeet, but i have been know to shoot a partridge or two with the 410 - in fact I just realized that the very first ruffy I ever took on my own was shot over the first dog I ever trained by myself, a pointing lab!
That was quite a few years ago, however, and I use a 20 or 28 far more than the 410 now.
I do not use factory ammo too much, unless I find it at a garage sale.
I hand load using BPI wads and LiL' Gun powder.

My first shotgun, which I still have, was a Stevens 311A sxs 16 gauge...
I enjoyed it very much and still do.

I'm with Cat on this one. I grew up shooting a .410 and enjoyed it a lot. I am kind of anal about wounding and/or losing grouse and ocassionally I would have a puff of feathers out of a ruffy and it would fly away using my Pa's .410. I was given the opportunity to try a 20 gauge and I have never looked back. Just that bit more powder, bit more shot and no appreciable increase in recoil and I wasn't having any more fly aways. I discovered that I can shoot ducks with my 20's as well as shoot skeet all day long without the punishment of a 12.
The 410 does have it's charms though and according to the boys from the southern US they call them Snake Charmers because they carry them to use on rattlesnakes.
I would still have my Pa's old Savage O/U 410 if some low life hadn't stolen it from him up in Northern BC.

Keep Your Powder Dry,
Dave.

We bought a youth single shot a few years back for the kids and now my wife and I prefer it for grouse. So much so that she said we need two. Gotta hate it when your told to buy a gun. Was looking at the yildiz folder too.

I currently don't own a .410 shotgun. However I did own a Remington 870 Express pump years ago. That is one gun I am kicking myself for ever selling.

Ive seen this model at Phoenix Gun shop, very interesting and the little case it came with would go nice for a truck gun. How do you like it, Lock up tight? Any issues?

There is only a few thousandths of an inch difference between the 45 Long Colt and the .410 shotgun shell -.471 for the .410 compared to .473 for the 45LC.
so, in a gun chambered for the 45LC you can shoot the .410.

never done it before, but I cannot see it being much different thaan loading any other brass case for shotguns.
deprime/reprime

powder

nitro card wad

spacer cusion wad

shot

glue in overshot wad

Those that want to try it, don't worry about the shot charge getting close to the top, because the over shot wad will keep the shot from spilling out.
I suppose one could add spacer wads until you could put a crimp , but then you are stressing the brass every time you reload, as the crimp needs to be rolled out to put the wads in.
Sooo, I glue in my over shot wads, either with contact cement or Tremclad glue.

The wads will have to be slightly oversized BTW, or else the powder will not build the proper pressure.
PM me for any specific questions you may have for loading bras cases!
How 'd I do?

A tad expensive for a simple single shot 410. But, if you are buying this model for it's features, ...easy storage, extremely light, etc etc. then I have to say it well worth the money.

I have shot too many single and even double barrel 410's that were pu on 12 gauge or 20 gauge frames/action...just too heavy.

I have shot a lot of rabbits and grouse with it ...

Locks up tight, nice gun.

So can you use 45lC in a 410 shotgun as well?

I have a single shot 410, great little shotgun, can't remeber the model off hand though. I haven't used it for a real long time though.......

Lots of hassle as far as I am concerned, unless a fella likes to tinker!
I prefer to simply load .410 hulls.

I was given a Savage .410 pump with vent rib for my first shotgun many (too many) years ago. I shot many a grouse with it. I still have the gun and sometimes use it for "bush hunting". But there isn't a great deal of shell selection where I am and they are expensive . I also have a couple of Cooey .410's in my collection as well as an Iver Johnson that is in like new condition.

I forgot to add that I bought mine for $50.00, it was in good shape but the guy told me it didn't pattern very well so I checked it out a little further and looked through the barrel to see that someone had changed the front bead and the threads were sticking down into the barrel. Took it out, filed it down, touched up the threads and put it back in. Works great. Good thing the previous owner didn't try firing a slug through it

Good job Cat!!!!!!!! Thought I would wait a bit to rib ya on not trimming the rim but you got her. I made up a hundred cases a few years a go just to tinker as you say. The one thing for sure is they do make a satisfying clunk when you drop them in just like a nitro rifle. For the aristocrat there is no better sound.

It's one of the cool things about shootign my 12, 16, 20, and 28 gauge BP guns with black powder - real cool when you drop them it- not so cool if you forget that your Remington SXS has ejectors and kicks the cases out onto the skeet station!!

Default .410 like no other..

If you ever get a chance to fire 3" .410 slugs out of a 4.25 inch barrel derringer,,,,,DO IT. It is a blast. The #4 shot had a 10" pattern at 5 yards.

Surprisingly it is only restricted and costs $700.00 at Phoenix in Edmonton and at questar.com

I'm from Newfoundland originally too. I used a CIL 410 single shot growing up, had a beagle to help push them out to me too. I bought a remington model 870 pump action 410 when I moved to fort McMurray. I used to shoot 3 inch #4or #6. Its a precision weapon, makes a chickens head dissapear pretty quick. Full choke to keep a nice tight pattern.
