Default Grass seed

Rather than sidetrack the other thread about pet spots/grass seed, thought I would put up a new thread.

We have had some work done in our yard recently that leaves us with large areas of dirt. We need to reseed and can't use sod because of water restrictions with where we live (acreage with other acreages drawing from the same well). We need a good, economical grass seed to reseed a fairly large area. Any recommendations on what to use?

Get a mix from someone like Hanna Seeds in Lacombe. Order by the pound. Will be cheaper than buying from canadian tire

X2.

Or any seed dealer in your area, check with elevators and chemical/fertilizer dealers, they will all be able to get you a mix in larger quantities.

I just research grass seed. Make sure you know what you want. Some need lots of mowing, others don't. We definitely don't want to mow much but some people think it's fun :-)

Buy only fescue grass seed. Grown in Alberta by local farmers. If you buy directly from farmer very low cost. Most grass seed mixes are mainly fescue. One of the largest sod farms used only fescue for their sod, waste of money to buy kentucky blues, they belong in kentucky anyway. They all look the same on a lawn.

Seed elevators and buy 50lb bags, they usually have suggested mixes and will custom mix stuff if you want to be fancy.
I got a 60 bluegrass/20fescue/20 rye made up when we did ours, frost seeded it in october. Top dressed with some old fescue the father in law had in the spring and worked real well.

How do I find somebody in my area? I am looking for grass seed that is low maintenance and doesn't break the bank.

Look for a seed grower. Just any seed grower can order anything you want.

I would rather buy from seed growers/farmers. I have my own mix in mind.
