a long shot.. depending how big of pieces you need you might try a few woodworking shops scrap bins. Might be pieces good enough for laminating together.
Alder is considered a hardwood. Lots of old farmyards have some fairly big box alders in their shelterbelts. Go for a country drive/scout and you might be able to get full logs for nothing. If I still had my farmyard you could have had logs for free. Alder is nice clear knot free wood too.
