Default 2010 bull moose with the bow

Hey guys, hope everyone is having a good start to the season. Decided to pack along the bow into elk camp this year with a moose tag in case the bulls were rutting in the area. Boy, were they ever. Called this guy into 40yds and tripped the trigger. Shot looked a little low but in the vitals to me. In hindsight I should of left him there overnight and then came looking. Angle of the shot was slightly quartering towards so the arrow missed the heart and hit the liver. Thankfully there was snow on the ground cause this moose covered massive amount of ground before he died the next morning. I would still be sick if i had not recovered this animal. Will analyze the shot more thoroughly before letting go next time.

congrats on the moose.you are probably glad that you retrieved him that night because even when its minus 10 out moose hold to much body heat and can spoil over night.Good hunting

Actually found him in the morning. I'll give more of the story today, got more time to kill right now. Waited 1/2 hour after the first shot, was kinda worried then cause I never heard him hit the ground. Found his first bed only 50 yds into the woods, good sign I thought. Trail kept going though, found another bed 100yds from the first, but no moose, lots of blood, looked fairly dark but at the time I figured I'd hit him in the heart area. 300yds from point of impact he jumps out of his bed at 50-60yds and limps away in the now darkening woods. I backed out of there instantly and headed back to camp. Told the guys what I did and the details as I knew them. We decided to give the bull a couple of hours to stiffen up and bleed out. We had supper and headed out. From what I remember we took up the trail at around 9pm and followed the blood trail 3hours through the dark woods, not kicking him up once. Blood every step and when he bedded the bed was soaking with blood. He crossed a cutline we were familiar with around 12am and me and another buddy decided to call off the chase and leave him over night, or morning, however you want to look at it. Walked back to the quads where we left them about 8km away and got back to camp. I was up first thing in the morning, stretched out the kinks and we headed back to where we gave up the chase. Only walked in the woods about 2/3 of a km and thats where we found him and judging by how limber he was and warm had just died. Gutted him out and was relieved to smell that he was still good for the freezer, Would of been a damn shame to loose 700pounds of meat to feed to the wolves. To date this is definately the toughest retrieval of a game animal I have been a part of. Really wish I had known he was only hit in the liver and I would of backed away instantly, maybe he would'nt have had to run so far from where I shot at him. Oh well, next time I guess.
