I have dove in icy waters before. Man I can tell you from my personal experience that it is not something that I would recommend anyone trying anytime soon. There is nothing I enjoyed about it. From that day forward I vowed to only dive if the water was warm. I mean like Caribean warm.

Once the brain freeze goes numb, it's really not that bad lol.
It's actually a really cool experiance. I haven't been ice diving in a couple of years, but I'm hoping to go back in this year.
My worst ever diving experiance was ice diving though. Had a reg free flow at 80+ feet. Did a bunch of rope tugs which is the emergency signal for 'get us outta here', and the rope tender just fed out more rope.
I did an emergency ascent, dragging two divers tethered to me, and made it to the surface safe and sound. We had just hit bottom, so we ended up fine as far as nitrogen build-up. I was pretty upset with the tender, and it was a sobering experiance for all involved.
I went back down though, and still love it.
Most of the ice diving trips out at minni start in Feb/March. I dive with the Dive Shop on Macleod trail, although there are other outfits that you'll see out there.
