Default Train derailed...

Not sure when this happened but this morning I saw a westbound CPR train derailed....I'm guessing about a dozen cars.....about 4 miles west of Provost.

All grain cars? Hope if there was any hazmat cars, they maintained integrity, and that the crew was able to walk off.

Rail activity1 (as measured by million train-miles) is estimated to have increased 1.3% from 2010 but decreased 3.6% from the five-year average. The accident rate is 12 accidents per million train-miles in 2011, compared to 12.8 in 2010 and the five-year rate of 13.6.

Rail-related fatalities totaled 71 in 2011, compared to 81 in 2010 and to the five-year average of 81.

In 2011, a total of 204 rail incidents were reported under the TSB mandatory reporting requirements, up from 160 in 2010 but comparable to the five-year average of 205.

In theory yes. They would be heading to a port on the coast to be offloaded onto a barge.

Any closer up pictures? I think I see a couple cars in there that aren't canpotex. Likely belong to mosaic or pcs.

Are their people on scene working to clean it up etc? Surprised there doesn't seem to be all that much going on by your pictures.

Freight train derails in Central Alberta

CP says there are no injuries or environmental concerns from the crash

CBC News Posted: Apr 28, 2013 12:30 PM MT Last Updated: Apr 28, 2013 1:04 PM MT

A Canadian Pacific freight train carrying potash derailed Sunday morning in Provost, near the Saskatchewan border. (Canadian Pacific Railway)

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating after a Canadian Pacific train carrying potash derailed early Sunday morning.

The Alberta town of Provost is near the Saskatchewan border.
The train was en route from Saskatchewan to the B.C. coast when 17 cars carrying potash derailed around 4 a.m. MT near the town of Provost, says CP spokesman Kevin Hyrska.

No one was injured and CP says there are no environmental concerns from the derailment.

It's not clear yet what caused the cars to leave the track.

looks like cp is taking on cn's knack for flopping trains off the tracks.

They are easy to derail, they do a pretty good job of keeping them on the tracks for the most part. Every track and switch has to be aligned properly all across the country... One loose peice and shes done for.

If it is all potash cars there is no immediate safety concern. I'm guessing their need to investigate is trumping cleanup right now.

I'm having a look at that zoomed in picture on my laptop now instead of my phone. They definately aren't all Canpotex cars. The one car in the middle of the wreck almost looks like it is split open, the interior of the Canpotex cars are somewhere between a light teal and a robin's egg blue and that is what I'm seeing in the picture. Though I'd expect to see some amount of spilled potash product if they were loaded cars. Guess it is hard to tell though.

I can't imagine the train was going all too fast when this happened. It's been a while since I lived in Provost, but didn't CP usually putt through town at like 15 or 20km/h?

And they moving oil would be safer by train rather than pipeline.

Trains are running again....crews worked thru the night.

And this aerial photo shows what seems to be the culprit. Looks like the water may have undercut the grade....

Ugly week for the railroad. First this, then Via derailed in a washout near Togo, SK and now CN detailed near Pense, SK.
