Default in need of a good beginner gun

hey guys, we are looking for a gun for the younger brother. He's only 13, and quite small. We arent real fond of the .243, but want something that will be a good all round gun. thanks in advance for your help!

Look at the 7mm-08,it is much more versatile than the 243,and you can even buy lower recoil loads from Remington, if you don't reload.Have a look at the link below.

250 savage is a good starter gun and better cartridge than most give it creidt for. 6.5x55 is also good

Do you reload? If so, there are lots of great options from 250 savage, 257 Roberts, 25-06, 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 7x57, 7-08, 308. All are equally capable deer rifles.

If you do not reload, I would stick with 6.5, 7x57, 7-08 and 308.

If you are looking for a deer/elf/moose rifle, 308 would be my preference.

FWIW, I was a skinny whip of kid (I mean really skinny) until I was 16 or so, but I regularly shot my uncle's 8mm Rem Mag without any issues. Good shooting form and a rifle that fits will do more to prevent recoil sensitivity issues then going super light IMO.

ETA, whoops! That should say Elk, not Elf.

I think that a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 is just the ticket for your 'lil bro. Affordable, low recoil and quite capable.

Yup, that's what I was thinking too, the .308 is way too much rifle for an Elf....probably a .17 hmr would take out an elf at under 100 yrds.....

I don't know about that. 17hmr for faeries maybe, but i think I would step it up for elfs; that Dobby looks like a tough little SOB.
