Unless you're looking for something specific you can't get locally, buying fishing gear online isn't a winning game in my experience.

By the time you pay shipping (and exchange if it's coming out of the USA), it's usually just as expensive, and often even more expensive, than buying locally and you have to wait to get it.

When it comes to rods and reels, or anything you might need a warranty on, be careful, because you're generally out of luck. Local retailers aren't going to go out of their way to help you out with something you bought online, and I can't say as I blame them. The same goes for the manufacturer's Canadian warranty centers.

Your best bet in my opinion is to shop around a bit, get to know a few of the guys at your local retailers, and if you've got time, buy when they have sales.

For surf fishing tackle I just tried Basil Manning out of south africa. The rand has been beaten up lately and even with the $45 shipping it is still cheaper than a US site I have used. Also I use 7 seas pro shop in Malaysia, similar shipping and wait times but huge selection of stuff.
