If only these tree huggers actually put their money to good use, instead of the propaganda machine.

Waitup: Is this video actually a surprise to anyone? We all knew there was an anti-oilsands lobby in the US, so the only thing that surprises me is that it took so long for this video to appear. I guess the time is ripe, what with oil being on everyone's minds down there, thans to the Gulf disaster.
But I'd say that writing this off as a bunch of hippies is oversimplifying things. Hippies wrote the Whole Earth Catalogue. High-powered money pays for stuff like that video. And believe me, it may only be hippies who are anti-oilsands in Alberta, but elsewhere, it's a lot more widespread than that.
I'm pretty sure that Alberta's tourism people are trying to get some sort of feel-good message out ASAP...

So the Yanks would rather get all their fuel from the Middle East and Venezuela? Sounds smart 'cause they are such trustworthy allies.

The argument is that those sources are cleaner running. I have no idea if the argument holds up once you work in the pipes to the ports and the shipping.
I also don't know how big a factor Newfoundland is in all this...

This obviouslly is the con side of the debate - no mention of any of the research invivled in trying to downsize or even eliminate the ponds, etc.
I see the Sun has launched a front page bash of the Gulf oiul spill thing, yet those people are trying desperately to get things under control , also.
Whether or not they are doing it to save money, OR save the enviroment as the first concern does not matter to me , what matters is that the are attempting to do somethiung about it, same as up here.....

The enemy of my enemy is my friend. People don't see that, though, they see the mess that's been created. Unfortunately, research doesn't come for free and a company can't research without income. So, they could stop producing the oil everybody needs for their vehicles which may stop the damage, but would result in higher gas prices and no new research being done to limit or remove the problem. Then they would focus their whining on the high price of gas.
You just can't win with these people. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

At first I was a little tiffed at this when I heard about it then I figured ah what the he!!.. Who really pays attention to this ??? just the bunny huggers and they don't come up here and spend any money anyways.. Its the people with the big motor homes or the fishermen or hunters or the families taking the big Canadian tour they are the ones that spend the doe and they could careless about what these groups have to say..
I had to wonder though.. I heard this on the news once again this morning on the way to work and honestly it was the next half hr broadcast that they were talking about how in some of the U.S, states they are culling,, yes culling the Canadian goose populations and how in some regions of southern Ontario they use oil on the eggs of geese to help cull the population ???? WTF.. On one hand we are evil for killing a few water foul but yet it is cool to cull them and douse their eggs with oil.. Man this world really needs an azz kicking yah know..

This sort of garbage really polarizes things and makes it an "us against them" deal. Makes it pretty hard to be in the middle. I'm somewhat concerned about the impacts of the Oilsands (more on water, wildlife, and the use of power than on CO2) and think govt needs to regulate them well. But on the other hand I don't advocate shutting anything down or to stop buying the product (heck, my company ships it). They (and we) just have to keep improving, that's all. But it's hard to remain in between the "They're EVIL!" camp and the "Screw off, everything's fine" camp.

I think we should give them what they ask for, stop sending oil, natural gas, energy and clean water down there for about a week or so and see how long they boycott Alberta.
What bugs me most is when they boycott the tar sands and yet drive their gas guzzling vehicles every single day without so much as a second thought. I wonder if they realize how many things are made from petroleum?
It's just as bad as David Suzuki driving across Canada in a diesel guzzling/carbon spewing tour bus and saying he's "carbon neutral" because he purchased carbon credits. What a load of bull. . .and even that produces greenhouse gas emissions!! lol

the thing that really bugs me about this , is that the oilsands are developed as much as they have been to feed the AMERICAN economy and not to mention the single largest oil consumer on the planet the AMERICAN MILITARY. the main investors in the oilsands are AMERICANS. they are the largest green house gas producers. the most wasteful nation in the world. yet they cry about the oilsands they themselves invest in. ? go figure ?
and most of those tailings pipes they show are back filling old mines and old tailings ponds. thats just sand and water. but that doesnt sound too exciting and terrible so lets not mention that.

U'm I'm pretty sure that the incidents of disease down stream of the tailing ponds has been well documented, I know we all gotta make a living but looking at something criticly is not necessarily a bad thing. I know a lot of workers in that project from our region suffer from enviromental illnesses, of some sort or another.

Well for one thing, saying the area of 42,000 acres is large enough to be seen from space (so's my wife's van BTW on Google Earth ), but then go on to say it's twice the size of England? Ummm........

there are many other contributing factors to an increase in disease, lifestyle is the biggest one. There has been nothing proven to be caused by the oilsands projects. do some research and learn the facts.
The Athabasca River does contain traces of bitumen, and the residual natural chemicals, such as PAHs, mercury, and arsenic that exist in bitumen. But information dating back 50 years shows no significant change in the quantities of those trace materials. The banks of the river have natural bitumen seeps in many places, so these chemicals in the Athabasca River, oddly enough, are a natural phenomenon.
Just like every other river in alberta, high consumption of fish from the streams is not recommended. I would be willing to bet that there has been no increase in disease, just in disease diagnosis.
check out the canada oilsands website.

Those incidents of disease down stream wouldn't have anything to do with poor diets and years of substance abuse would they ??? nah that wouldn't sound right either,, can't be saying that. Or how about the fact that mercury is a natural occurrence in that river and if you live off of it it will have side effects,, nah can't be saying that that wouldn't make the news either..
No I am not saying it is perfect but it definitely is made out to be a lot worse than what it actually is.. Fear sells common sense doesn't..

I think the entire deposit is twice the size of england. That doesn't mean that the whole area will be ripped up. The large mines of suncor and syncrude are the points where the bitumen is very shallow. Most is deep and requires SAGD to get it out. A much smaller and cleaner footprint.
I find it odd they are trying to stop a very clean industry (tourism) because of a dirtier industry... kind of counter productive.
ahh well, less yankees in the way of my mountain scenery. lol

i grew up in fort mcmurray. there is oil every where and its in the river bed too. did you think the oilsands was everywhere except where the river went?
in the hot days of the summer you can watch the oil seep from the hills and cliffs and pour into the water. this is what the people down stream of this area have been drinking for as long as they have been there. long before anybody started mining it.
when we were kids mom used to beat the crap out of us cause we would play in the tar ponds on the shore of the horse river. who knows what im gonna die from?
