Talking To good of deal to say no

A couple days ago I toured past the gun rack at my local Canadian Tire.

Recently they must have got a bunch of firearms in as there were lots of new firearms on the rack.

Then I saw it.

A Mariln 1895G in 45/70, it wasn’t that I’d never seen one of them before, it was the price tag that caught my eye. I won’t list the price, but let’s just say it was the lowest price on a 1895 I’ve seen in some time. I asked if it was an error, and the staffer assured me the price was accurate.

I mulled the purchase over and did some web surfing to confirm my thoughts on the price.

So the next day I went in to buy it.

While I was at the gun rack a young guy hit me up to sign up for a CT credit card, and receive 18% CT money on my first purchase. I signed up, and the rifle was delivered to the check out. I paid with my new CT card, got my 18% CT money, then a $30 off promo card was given to me by the cashier, so another $30 was taken off the price.
I promptly paid off my CT card at the same time

Picked up a box of 300 grain Federal Fusions, which I tried half of yesterday, they aren’t to bad to shoot if you keep your cheek on the stock.

I threw a 1-4x20 VX1 Leupold, I had kicking around on her this morning because my eyes ain’t no good for irons like they used to be.

I mailed ordered in a die set, a bag of brass, some 300 grain jacketed Sierra’s, and some 460gr. cast lead, gas checked slugs.(these are gonna be big medicine)

Before everyone goes hog wild, it was the only one of these rifles at the low price they had on the rack, that I could see.

Nice rifle. Be careful you don't catch Marlinitis, also known as the letter disease.

It may start with a G, or an SS in my case, but can quickly progress to include SBL, GS, CBA, XLR, among others. All in the 45-70 persuasion. Don't ask me how I know this.

You'll find Benchmark or H335 works quite well with those 460's

I've got 405gr hollow base and plain base molds if you ever want to swap bullets, I've got a 500gr mold on order but I'm not sure it'll fit in the Marlin action, it's more for single shots. When it arrives I'll cast a few and see if they fit mine, I've got the exact same rifle from CT...

Wood to metal is not bad, the bluing is thin(as is most bluing these days) the wood finish is almost like there isn’t any. If I keep her, the stock will be refinished.

At the end of the day, the fit and finish is by today’s standards is abit above average.

Gone are the hand fitted and deeply blued Marlin’s or any other major make for that matter. The costs of such detail would ballon the price to astronomical levels.(you don’t work for free, neither do guys who work for Marlin)

Just finding a stock with a bit of character in it was far above average.

I have a tough time turning down good deals, but unless It's something that I really want, or that I can flip quickly for a gold profit, I am getting better at resisting.

Now that will put the smack down on a critter. Thumb bullets!
Look forward to seeing the whitey you get with it out of that condo in the sky!
Hopefully after the load development she groups well for you too.

Glad you found such a good deal. You will love the 45-70. I have always had at least two or three around for the past 40 years. Far and away the best thumper of black bears for bear control I ever used and we tried everything from 460 down to 243.

The heavier bullets work fine, ( with the 500 grain bullets you have to seat them deep enough to cycle and this affects which powders you can use) but you don't need more than 350 to 405 grains to get complete pass throughs, front to back on moose and bear. Also, 1600-1900 fps loads kick way less than the hot loads and kills every bit as well. It is the size of the hole that does the job, not the velocity. My favourite jacketed bullets is the 350 Grain Hornady RN and the old Remington 405 Cor locks.

With the scope you will easily be good to 250 yards. Let us know how the reloads come out.

Dean2 is pretty much on the money with his bullet choices. The remy's are hard to find these days. If you can find them, Barnes originals in 400gr FP 0.032" jacket are excellent bullets, expand just a little but hold together really well.

Hornady 350gr FP's are almost as good as the RN, but the RN should be fine in the tubular magazine.

I’m done shooting bears!

I still run a bait or two and usually try helping someone get a bear if they want.

I just might shoot a deer or two with this rifle.

Make sure you post some pics of how she shoots at 100. I am very interested. That setup has always intrigued me.

This is from an 18" barrel Remlin that looks just like yours. Top two pictures, open sights 100 yards with 350 RN and 2 405 Cast. Second picture with scope and 350 RN.

Dick, order up some of Bullet Barn's 390g gas checks. Play with h4198 at around 1750 fps.

'Nuff said.

Why not list the price? If you're not gonna flip it on here for new price +30% like most equipment exchanges what's the big deal?

And why do think the price is any of your business? If new price + 30% gets paid for something on here, that's a buyer issue not a seller issue.

Well, I thought I really wanted to know...now I don't think I do. Enough to be depressed about without getting that tidbit. lol One day I'll own one of those.

For the record, you'd be hard pressed to find a deal on a sh***y Chinese air gun at the Canadian Tire near my house. Firearms? ZERO. Ammo? Dusty old collection of over-priced stuff in a small, poorly lit cabinet. You guys have it good. We have Kathleen Wynne, the opposite of good.

I love my Marlin 45-70. I've got the stainless guide gun and I know it is one of the rifles I will never part with.

Perfect gun for hogs, black bears and other bush critters.

I'm not a lever gun guy, but this one is very nice.

Good find.
