Cool My new toy.....

Well, Thanks again to everyone thats helped me on my search for an auger. I finally got one! 2hp Jiffy White Lightning 8in, WSS $339.00, Just got her opened up and put together. Seems like a very solid auger!!!! Couple plastic parts but other than that no complaints! Haven't had a chance to mix fuel up yet so can't tell you how it runs.

Anyone have any experience with the White Lightning?
Also for those interested WSS south side has the Jiffys and Strikemasters on sale. Good prices but they are GOING FAST.

Pictures to follow this weekend!
Man am I excited, NO MORE HAND DRILLING!!!!!!

Do a search and make sure it's tuned properly. JIffy has a history for shipping them out way too rich and it will cause problems later on down the road.

You should be able to tell. If it's a bit smoky to putters, too rich. Pops or backfires, to lean.

I have the 9 inch, works great. I found if you dont use the choke, just hold the throttle wide open when you start it, it fires up in one or two pulls no matter how cold it is, then give it about half choke and it drills like crazy. works for me anyways

Yours is running too lean then. Turn your carb screw out and it should run better for you.

I've owned a white lightning 2hp 8'' for about 8 years and it's still running strong.

Even seven years ago the auger partially fell out of the truck and the engine compartment started dragging along the highway for about a good 6km.
The tank of an auger definitely had some metal scraped off, but it still ran like new.
All that's had to be replaced was minor things like a spark plug, a ripcord and a throttle link.

WELL, This evening i had some time to pick up a jerry can and mix some fuel. Got 'er filled up and started!!! Runs like a champ, started 2nd pull. Wow, dont remember augers being that loud but whatever, I think I can handle it .
I took off the auger and ran it sitting on a pail for about 15mins on 3/4 throttle like it says in the manual. Not sure the point of this...but i guess i will listen to "the almighty book".

So far very happy with it. Now i just have to get it on the ice!

Tightlines!

I found it vibrating quite a bit when you're using it. Guess that's normal? Let me know your thoughts when you start using it Frenzy.

Will do Sushi.

Also forgot to mention, I didn't buy any sort of auger specific oil i just used snowmobile oil for mixing and injection systems.

We use it in all our two stroke sleds and it works great. Augers are also a two stroke.. so hence.. it should work.

Anyone see future problems with using snowmobile oil?

do yourself a favor go to the fishin hole or where ever and get the jiffy oil / fuel stabilizer . I use to just use oil but the thing got all plugged up that stabilizer also makes it seem run better in the cold to .

reason why they say run it for 15 min is to get it heated up and set the gaskets and seals .

Remember when you put it away for the winter make sure its full of gas with that stabilzer stuff so that next winter pull it out and youll be game to drill holes .

Good auger but spend the extra few dollars and get the Mako . Im a Jiffy guy but I like the Eskimos to nice throttle on them and pull cord when you got your mits off they dont gotta come off . where as the Jiffys do .
I think im done with gas augers and gonna move to a Gator or something .

I picked up the Shark a month ago. It's been a great unit. Seems alot more quite than the jiffy's I heard last weekend. Starts easy and has been cutting through 3' of ice without pulling it out to clear chips.

Never had another power auger so I can't compare, but I do love my Shark.

You make a good point stang, thats exactly the problem I had with my new one. But a few turns of the screw and she seems to be running alot better. I wouldn't buy another one though I've had to tinker it with it way too much for a new auger but hey live and learn I suppose. Still beats hand drilling.

And hey if I ever run out of work I could probably become a small engine repair dude!! I can tell you how to rewind the starter thingy and re-cord it too. Yeah okay its a POS. LOL.

I own one of each....and they both have advantages
Jiffy Model 30 10"
Approx 15 years old has been completely reliable and the blades last forever, good thing cause thet are not cheap!
Will start in under 6 pulls no matter what the weather.Cuts very well but needs some downforce to get er done. All metal, almost indestructable!!

New last year Eskimo Shark Z71 10"
Alot of plastic, starts easy, idles great with no messing with the carb.
It cut extremely well with the stock blades, till I went thru some sand then the blades were toast. With the stock blades all you had to do was hang on and let the auger cut,no downforce needed. The blades (and the replaceable pilot point) are no where near as durable as the Jiffy blades, tho they are alot less $$$.

The next set I put on would not cut without excessive downforce so I had to adjust the angle of blades with some wire to get it to cut properly, still not as good as stock but much better.Eskimo does not spin as fast as Jiffy but when it was with the stock blades it was less effort, now its about the same.

If I was to build the perfect auger I would put the Jiffy auger/blade on the Eskimo motor, and I just might do that...I hate having to change blades when its cold out and the Jiffy has never made me do that, and it literally has drilled thousands of holes.
All the newer augers are getting plasticy,I don't think any of them could be banged around like my old Jiffy and still function like it does so buying a new auger is gonna be about price and what you want.

I have never seen a Strikemaster in action, how do the blades last?
Looked at them last year(when I bought the Eskimo) but couldn't find a 10"

congrats on your new auger....

as others have mentioned.... opti oil and stabilizer and
you should be in for years of trouble free drilling.
dont forget to drain all the fuel and run it dry in the spring
so its stored dry. If you stick to this method of maint you
shouldnt have much problems with it .
Many of the augers use the same Tecumche motors and
they are a work horse in most cases. Treat them right with
fresh fuel / good synthetic oil for smokless burning / stabilizer
to stop the varnish build up.

ps/ drill a few extra holes for the newbies fishing next to you on
the lake while Hand drilling is fresh in your mind .
They just might have a few extra cookies for your !

Kinda like replacing two divots when you make one in golf.

Default Jiffy

I have the first 3hp Jiffy ever built over 20 years now ....cut 3-5 thousand holes a winter...I rattled her 20 or more kms in the Otter every trip and I have touched up the blade twice...I move the high speed jet when it's -30 and when it's 0 or above...mix any tc3 50/1 but ALWAYS use GOOD (new) gas. When you are in dout if it's 1 or 1 3/4 turns on the jet for stock call Jiffy great folks and toll free.. I do this for a living and wont /can't get rid of this old girl.... keep your tip up!!

Through out your gas in the tank every spring and start fresh in the winter...

Danny
