Dickson Dam has a provincial recreation area beside it with access to the lower part of the dam/red deer river. Heavily fished, but if you walk the river a ways down its not bad.

There are definitely brown trout between the section from Dickson to Red Deer city. They are few and far between, but if you catch one, they are almost always absolute beauties.

About 3 or 4 times now. The latest was last year. Drifted from the dam to Hiway 54 bridge. Takes about 8 hours if I recall. Last year, two of us caught a few browns, a few whites and a bunch of goldeye.

Default yup

Just to add to what Gerald wrote, ~8 hrs with a half hour lunch break and the occasional hold for a fish.

Default float

Floated that section last year. Have a friend with property about the halfway point where we took out. Could have been due to the flows and we took our time but it was a 6 hour float to that point. Whitefish and goldeye were the target that day. The butter eluded us but a gorgeous float.

I haven't tried putting in right below the dam, but I've floated from RR20 to the highway 54 bridge. Keep in mind the float times vary greatly depending on the time of year and river conditions. Last spring the RR20 float to Hway 54 was just over 3 hours, way to fast...Later in the year it was double that

Thanks for the responses. Three of us have been on the clear water and started scouting the red deer for some variety. Unfortunaty one guy passed away suddenly in early sept so we never made it. Hope to do it this summer.

There are some great stretches to fish. We float it every year. We usually do the shorter floats and spend extra time stopping. The 5 hours stretches out to close to 8 because we stop at several spots. There is usually one area full of sweepers reaching out from the north bank, but other than that its an easy float. Never had a problem since the wife took a wrong turn once. Added a half hour to her trip, but she to and new fishing spots.
