I was at the Southside Fishin' Hole today talking to one of the staff and he was telling me he was talking to a local from around Cold Lake and that there is still open water. Anyone confirm or refute this?

yes It's time for a new thread Cold Lake
No there is not open water. Some say that the ice varies in thickness.
Although I haven't fished CL this year yet, I've seen trucks out on French Bay.
I'm doing a check today and will report back.

Default Cold Lake

So just got back from checking things out. I seen trucks quite far out on French Bay, many trucks on in front of the marina and didn't see any past the launch at the provincial park

Splakeo How's it going ! Its been awhile. Hopefully see you out on the ice this year . Maybe with the lack of ice thickness the fish will get a break this year.
I am sure someone will tell us its the otters eating the Lakers.

I heard from a fella that has seen the otters too.I believe him. I would not say there is no open water. Lots of flood water and a lot of snow. I wouldnt be driving a vehicle out there yet, and I've driven out there a lot over the last 30 yrs. heard of 4" out there in one spot today.

I was just there. 10" of good ice. I drove the sled out and started to break through some of the flood ice. I was there for two day and a night fish. Ended up getting skunked

Invest in a flasher if you haven't already, helps out a lot.

Good luck! I'll be sledding on that lake this year. My truck isn't going to touch the ice this year

I was just up at cold lake this past Saturday - Monday and fished all three days. I fished English Bay and French Bay and the ice thickness definitely varied, however it was mostly 12-14 inches around the edges of French Bay and there was a lot of flood water on Monday from all the snow they got last Friday. I didn't see any open water. I drilled a lot of test holes (I was driving my half ton on the ice) and further in to Saskatchewan in the bay I found some thinner areas around 8" near shore. The ice in French Bay was very good, perfectly clear with no air pockets - the best I've ever been on actually. English Bay had around the same ice thickness, but not quite as clear and I did not drive on English Bay although I would having seen how thick the ice is. I only managed a few Lakers, but this was my first time ever to Cold Lake and it seemed very slow for the majority of the people I was fishing near over the whole weekend. It was awesome though, I caught my first lake trout! 2 that were keepers - and all 3 were carefully handled and released.

Watch out for winter bears they feed heavily on ice fishermen especially during warm spells....good luck!

You're going to need 30-120 feet for the Lakers. I usually fish for them in the 80 fow range
