Default fluorocarbon leaders

Would you say 40lb fluorocarbon is too light for a pike leader? Thanks

I used 25 all winter for ice fishing and the largest pike I landed was 16 pounds.I had no problems but did keep an eye on my leader and would cut some of the leader off when it would get chewed up.

I run a 50 pound florocarbon lead on a 50-60 pound brade. 40 would due, you just have to check you leader more often. i've known some people to run as large as a 70-80 pound florocarbon but i find it is so large and stiff to tie knots.

40 lb. test is plenty. I have used it for the past 4 years and never had any problems. You do have to check it after each catch to see if it has any nicks on it that weaken it. If it does then just replace it. This year I'm going to experiment by tying it directly to my braided line using a couple of uni knots and then knotting it straight to my lure without using a snap.

depending on the lure you may want to use a swivel in there somewhere to keep the lures action, the flouro is pretty stiff

There are a couple of knots you can use that leave the lure free to do its thing.

Used 30 lb for the first time this year and had a nice pike about 20 lbs shred it and take off. If I decide to use it again will definately be looking a 50+ lbs

I used 30lb flouro for a while until I lost a fatty pike at the boat, now I'm back to metal leaders. Maybe try 50 lb this spring as I do find flouro works better than metal.

I have never used anything other than a metal/wire leader. I am not even sure what the advantage would be to use a heavy weight flurocarbon leader would be other than possibly visibilty in the water with respect to the fish seeing the leader. If there are any advantages one way or the other I would love to hear about them, always looking to learn something new.

I was out pike fishing one day several years ago and didn't have any luck. I was using the traditional steel leaders so just for a change I decided to tie on a flourocarbon leader...well, the bite picked up and I was hooked on flouro. Was it because of the flouro leader? Maybe, maybe not but it was working. On the other hand, I use thick black line for my tip ups and I catch tons of pike in the winter so who knows...

wire leaders tend to kink and get twisted up after a fish or two, flouro doesnt

My personal favorite is the Titanium leader because it has no memory like steal and is half the thickness(if not more) But Pricey for a 6" Leader your looking at $6+

I got a couple spools of 50 pound knot2kinky titanium nickle leader material. couldnt find the right sized sleeves, but tied loops in it and used a bigger sleeve to seal it, seem to work ok too. I still prefer the fluoro, but havent really given the new stuff a good test run so that may change this season. I found that weight too heavy to tie properly, the lighter stuff is supposed to be easier to tie.
