Travel insurance tips
Bride and I booked a trip to Mexico for 2 weeks. We intend on adding Travel Insurance but have little knowledge or connections on purchasing insurance.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. What companies are good to deal with?
AMA, Costco. What coverage is a must and how much?
Big thanks in advance

Check with your credit card company , some credit card included insurance when you used to purchase ticket and car rentals .

2 cents
If you are a Blue Cross member a lot of their plans automatically cover you with travel insurance which covers the same stuff as you will purchase for your regular premium

Call your current insurance co and ask them. They all have travel insurance packages and you are likely to get a better price if you are a customer already.
Has worked out well for me a few times.

there is 2 types of coverage, medical and cancellation. Make sure you look into both and understand the details of them, particularly the cancellation in case of illness, rona, etc.

You will never go wrong with either AMA or Costco.
Have a great time on your trip!

Not sure if this is still a thing, but when we went to Huatulco last April we added Covid insurance (we already had regular travel insurance through our work benefit plans). We got the extra insurance through Costco and it was cheap ($25/each). This covered food and accommodation at $500/day for up to 14 days, if you tested positive and had to isolate and miss your scheduled flight home, as well as $500 each to book a one-way flight home.
Edit: Just found this.

People need to check out limitations on blue cross and work place travel insurance. Yes it is insurance in name but it sure doesn't cover much. Read the fine print on your policies.

If you have benefits through your employer then it is quite likely that the plan includes emergency out of country coverage.
Whether covered through work or purchasing individual coverage then it is important you understand the “pre-existing conditions”clauses as well as “stability periods” that virtually all plans have.
Unfortunately some people travel that may have a condition they think is “no big deal”, but might fall within the definition of a pre-ex condition or not be stable. Going into a hospital as a result of something within this definition could result in a claim being denied and footing the bill out of pocket. In some countries this can be substantial $.
The fact is that some people with obvious medical conditions are taking a real risk traveling should they need to be treated while out of country. If you have a medical condition or have had changes (new diagnosis, new medication, change in dosage (increase OR decrease)) then these are things you definitely want to clarify in your policy.
Statement like “automatically covered” usually mean automatically covered if stable and without pre-existing conditions.
