Default Bow River Monster

I was down at Policeman's Flats this afternoon, working a deep pool using a shad rap type lure when I hooked into something very heavy. At first, I thought I got snagged, but something long and heavy slowly came up. It was at least 30+ inches long with thick body and had spots. Just as it came near the surface, it shook a a couple of times, cut my line and took off with my lure. I was using 8lb test and it wasn't the knot that broke...the line was definitely cut either due to weight or by teeth. I am sure it wasn't a brown or a rainbow. It looked too thick to be a pike. What do you guys think it could be?

I thing that your clutch is set to tight. You do not haul the fish to the shore, you fight it till it is ready to come to the shore. You let it run and come back. There is more fun fighting the fish then hauling in a diner.

i also agree pike is a strong possibility, the largest pike i caught out of the bow is a 89cm pike when i was targeting rainbows with only 6lb test.

Its not always about (your) fun.. The quicker you (haul) it in and get it released; If thats your choice the better chance you have of catching it again. Unless you think that fighting it to the point of exaustion makes for a safer release.

There is a happy point for the fisherman and a fish. Equipment has to be chosen and properly set for the body of water one is going to fish.

Keep in mind that the pike are spawning in the next few weeks here. Many of the females are going to be really chubby.

I caught this one almost at the same spot you are referencing last year. 6 wt fly rod with 8 lbs test....was REALLY lucky she didn't break me off. She was 37.5" and weighed about 17 lbs.

My guess would be a linger. Saw one last year near mackinnon that must have been 20 lbs swimming along the bank. Very obvious it was not a pike.

That 20lb burb you saw would smash the record burbot in the province. Must have been a monster.

There are definitely pike in the bow in the city. I have personally caught some down near Inglewood golf course. As you get further upstream, they get very rare, but there have been some caught pretty far upstream from the city years ago.

It seems all of them are quite large as well.

Thank you all for your responses.

As many of you have mentioned, it must have been a chubby pike. Since that day, I've heard many stories of catching pike near policeman's flat.

Mystery solved!
