i heard if you smoke ciggeretts or prolly even cigars that when you put bait on the fish smell the smoke from your hands and are turned off by it true?

Yes of course. Gas, diesel, insect repellant, etc. is not good scents that fish are attracted to. If you do that, consider picking up a spray to cover the scent. Berkley and trigger x make some: Berkley Gulp Alive Spray

There's probably a little bit of a transfer from you fingers to the bait but it cant be much. I used to smoke and i put maggots, worms, minnows etc.. on my hook and the fish never seemed to mind. I think the scent from the bait would completely cover up any residue.

Ive noticed a huge difference in bite compared to me (when i usedto smoke cigarettes) and buddies who didnt smoke. Also depends on the bait.. never noticed much with pike, but rainbow trout i noticed a decline in bite. Now, if i smoke a cigar while fishing (which I always do) I just rub my hands together in the water or in sand or mud or anything to get that scent off. seems to work for me.

I don't think it makes a difference personally. I know lotsa fishermen that do and do not smoke. I definitely don't see the non smokers catching more fish, if anything the opposite lol.
That being said, I've wondered the same thing in the past, and ever since I rinse my hands in the body of water I'm fishing after almost every smoke(just in case)...in spring/summer anyway...not so much in the winter..brrr
Who knows...only the fish can tell you the answer to that one.
Cheers.

I've caught pike on a cigarette butt, and also a pop can tab, just trying to show a friend (new to fishing) that when pike are active you can catch them on pretty much anything......

I smoke and fish and never have issues catching fish .Some of my best fish catching days involve 4 litres of gatorade , and a pack of smokes and ham and cheese sandwiches and a cooler full of shiners .

X2 I'm no mythbuster but I have a hard time believing smoke has any factor on bait. I should add that non-smokers only catch more fish because they live longer. LOL.

A scent is a scent .. some attracted some don,t .. some are curious to scent .. others feed by scent.. its is your choice.. do you want to eat a fish that smokes or that doesn't smoke.. gheee did i just say that ;;;; lmao the scent industry is big business

I am not convinced about this but just to be fair this season I'm going to ask my non-smoking buddies to bait my hooks and see what kind of a year I have. I'm already thinking a lot less fish for me.Rick.

I would assume that all fish are 'different' when it comes to 'deterrents'.

I would think that the HUMAN smell might be one of the 'worst' for a fish, especially considering the ones that have been 'caught' once or twice before... They would likely have that HUMAN smell when being handled and as such, it may even be with them for a time 'after' they were caught. As small as their little brains are, they would definitely have a some 'memory' of being caught and being handled, along with the 'smells' that go along with it.

Not everyone 'smokes', but everyone does smell like a 'human'... (at least I would hope so..)

Just my .02

Cheers,

X2........that's just foolishness imho.

.....and fwiw, one of the most successful Atlantic Salmon flies of all time was inspired by a salmon that rose from the depths to inhale Father Elmer Smith's discarded cigar butt on the Miramichi river.....hence the Bomber was born.
