Dry fly floatant.
What is the best type of floatant for fishing dry flies. I got into some great dry fly fishing last night, but my flies would only sit on top for a short time. What's the best way to apply it? Thanks for the help, everyone have a great weekend.

Any silicon, based will work just a drop on your finger and then rub the fly. Another problem is when you catch a fish and you have to dry the fly, I like the shaker style with the fine white powder.

i use the fenwick world class fly floatant, i would apply it to the fly right after i tie it on the line and before i drop the fly in the water. i find when you apply/rub it into the fly it creates a barrier and ussually after its shows signs of sinking just blow dry it off just with your mouth and reapply after i dry the fly off if it continues to sink.

I used to use " gink" silicone based. Got it at TFH.
For best results pre treat flies and let cure over night.
It doesn't work worth a dam if the fly is damp.
And they wear off fairly quick if not pre treated.
If your in a pinch I've rubbed my finger down the side of my nose.
The oils from your skin will water proof a fly for a short time.

I like Royal Jelly from Loon Outdoors.
I also have a desiccant bottle to shake the fly dry. I don't use both together. But both have a place in my fly vest.

I would also recommend Aquel or Royal Gel (as mentioned above)! When gink, etc., is cold it tends to harden. Aquel and Royal Gel do not!! X2 with considering using a powder floatant in addition to your silicon based floatant! No matter how much silicon you use, a fly will eventually get saturated and the powder will get it up and floating high again, and again, and again...!!

I still use Mucilin line dressing. Just need a small bit and rub betweeen finger and thumb to soften and then apply to the fly. But, I also use Gherk's Gink

Of everything i'v tried over the years, Frogs Fanny Fly Floatant (say it 5 times fast) is definitely my favourite. It's a powder style brush on type.
