Check out the pflueger president or trion reels. They are super smooth and don't cost a ton.

If you check out ice shanty you will notice that there is quite a few guys on there that have most of their ice rods set up with these reels.

Depends on the species you're going after.

For little stuff (perch and stocked trout) I have a couple little Diawa Sweepfire reels that have treated me well, loaded up with 6lb NanoFil.

For anything bigger I use the same reels I use in the summer....for pike I'm using my Shimano Corvalus (round baitcaster) and a 4000 size Shimano Sahara - both loaded up with 80lb Powerpro.

Did you clean and greese your reels before putting them away last year and/or before using them this year?

X2 but quantim makes some really nice ice reels , as is the Zebco rhino , but for pike I love my baitcaster spooled with hefty braid fluro leader then it's game on . But for perch , walleye , whites I like a light set up 20 lb braid with 8 foot 8 lb fluro leader .

My fav is the Shimano 50 pricey about 70 but Browning makes a good one for right around 50 and so does the Plufger . Bass Pro has a decent 50 as well for around the 50 dolar range. All are the 50 series and will hold 150 yrds of 8 lbs braided no problem.

I have a couple of the mitchell but don't care for the drag.

Really bbj ? 20lb is a light setup?
