Downrigger release question

Anyone use a rubber band release clip when using a downrigger? I have always used the standard style that pinch the line but I have one that clips onto the steel line above the cannon ball and you clip a rubber band around it then to your line. Curious how best to attach it to the fishing line if you have done it.

Put the rubber band around the fish line then put it through its self and on to hook on cannon ball line.
