I've had good luck with both. The reason I like leaches is they stay on the hook way better. That and it makes me laugh that my old man is scared to put them on.

Minnows minnows minnows. You can never go wrong with a good minnow lol. Slave lake walleye seem to be to like minnows more than anything!

Funny story, many moons ago we were on a Slave Lake late May guys fishing weekend, made a hockey bet and the wager was we had to switch to minnows as our only bait for the rest of the trip, as we were both leech guys. Hence to say I lost the bet, had to use minnows for the rest of trip. That was 15 years ago, I am still on minnows, especially at Slave.. I have tried the odd leech along the way, but minnows have proven to be way more successful. leeches do stay on longer but i find they go limp and ineffective after a 10-15 minute lull in action. When the bite is really on, I cut my minnows in half and they work just as well.

I knew a guy like that. I got sick and tired of watching him try to put them on with pliers and would do it for him. No matter what I said or how many times I showed him, he just got the heebie jeebies from them so bad he couldn't do it. Honestly, it was funny as hell but I felt sorry for him so I never laughed in his face or teased him about it........that would just be rude.

But the killer was one time my bro and I took him out fishing and my bro's daughter came along (she started fishing with dad when she was 2 and LOVES fishing). So here's him asking me to put a leech on and this 10 yr old girl is going, "Here, hand me your hook, I'll put one one for ya" She never laughed either! She's a great kid.......gotta love her.

I have a picture of her and dad in the boat on Tobin lake with a 12+ lb walleye she caught. I've never caught one that big and I've been chasing them for 50+ years now!

I've fished all over SK and a few lakes in AB now and found that aside from leeches and minnows (never used minnows myself) beef heart has worked well everywhere I've tried it.

I use the Gulp Alive emerald shiners in place of minnows quite often. They stay on better and last a number of fish.
