Default Chain Lakes Reservoir - Why so many fish?

This may be a stupid question but I've always wondered why they stock so many fish at Chain lakes. 200,000 trout a year seems excessive. I've been there a few times and it doesn't seem like there are enough people fishing there to warrant the huge numbers. Is there even enough feed in the lake to sustain them? Do they have a high mortality rate from something else? I know there are quite a few pelicans but I can't see that being a reason for it.

Like I said, I've only been there a few times but I've never seen a fish out of there bigger than 11". I realize they stock them small there but still. Are they over populated and stunted or are the bigger ones just in a different area? It's a great spot to bring the kids to learn how to fish although I never seem to make it past PCR for that purpose.

Being so close to Calgary, I'd bet a lot of them are taken home for dinner.

It seems like a lot for sure. Many ice fishers go to Chain for a pail full of fish so I'm thinking it has more to do with that than summer pressure. Rick.

Chain Lakes (south) is designed as a "put and take" lake. Little or any bait restrictions, the fish are there to harvest. Fish get a little bigger by ice and there are some bigger fish if they get smart enough or lucky enough to survive the first year of lure and bait bombardment.
A person shouldn't get skunked at this lake any time.
