Default Freshwater Victoria Vancouver island

Heading to the island for a quick few days and wondering if it’s it worth taking fishing rod to try elk lake out in Victoria? Or should I take fly rod? Heard it’s full of bluegill and wouldn’t mind feed.

Any tips or suggestions would be great. Don’t have time for charter this trip.

Good memories and shoot...I never did get around to posting the small mouth pics. I'll find that camera tonight. They are all delicious, bass from there are very similar to walleye.

There's a lot of overhanging brush. it's quite a walk between spots in some places. Give yourself a full day. If I go back, I'd rent a boat. No bluegills. Lots of bass, easy to catch. Very clear water. 6 lb vanish fluorocarbon line.

Worms rigged weedless for bass. If you get short strikes, cut the worm down. See pic for what I used, could go one size smaller on the hooks. Just worm and hook, cast out and retrieve slowly along the bottom. Tiny micro jig with gulp fry under a slip float for the pumpkinseed.

Any other questions just ask. Good luck!

No bluegills in Elk lake, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass and yellow perch though. Worth bringing a rod for. Try off the fishing dock or along the path by the highway (there are a couple access points thru the brush.
