Default Help in choosing a low memory & affordable fishing line

Hi all:

I am very fortunate to be teaching a Hunter/Fishing Education class this year and as a result have some fishing trips planned. We went out today in K-Country and the kids had a blast regards of the ice on the lake and snow on the ground. My main question is this, can anyone recommend a type of line that is both affordable (school budgets) and has little to no-memory. I haven't bought line in years for my own rods and know that things have changed over the last little bit. We have about 30 rods that were gratefully donated to us by other users and a store but they aren't the best quality rods and subsequently don't have the best lines. I spent the better part of the day untangling, cutting, re-winding line due to massive memory in the line. I wanted to spend more of the day working on casting and reeling. I know we will eventually have to replace line, but would like one that can put up with lots of use. Small spool or big spool of line doesn't matter right now, eventually I would like to replace all the line.

Thanks for your help.

Why not braid? I know a little pricey as an initial investment but if it's used for school purposes I would assume that the one spool up of braid should last a few seasons for next years class! And if it needs to be replaced, don't, and just the other end of the line (where the line probably has been untouched)

As a bonus class, teach them how to tie a fluro/mono leader using a uni-knot!

Hard to beat Berkley Trilene XL or even XT good lines and wont be to hard on the budget. Mono is good for learning.

Might even be able to talk the Fishin Hole in to putting the line on using their bulk spools(maybe even talk them into low price or for free).

I agree with Berkley XL - the XL is "extra limp" meaning the line is specifically designed with lower memory than comparable line.

Mono is also easy to tie, has enough stretch for forgiveness and, like you said, cheap enough that break offs aren't a budget buster.

The other thing to consider - don't "overstretch" mono when spooling it onto a spinning reel. It should go on with some stretch (snug) but not so much to cause more problems.

I usually get one of the kids or my wife hold the spool with a pencil through the hub part and try and have them apply just enough pressure so the rod tip is just bent over a little so it goes on the spool nice and snug.

it a great way to stock up.

Sounds like you want the line for ice fishing. As has been said Berkely Triline XL, hits both of the limp and cheap notes. When I was a young fellow it was the line to use. Give it a bit of a stretch as it comes off the reel and it will hang straight down with the lightest lures or bait.

I would go with the braid or any of the superlines. Typical memory is less and can last in my experience up to 5 years easily. You usually don't use much line especially ice fishing. Stretch on superlines is about 0 and mono especially the limp stuff can be up to 25%.
XL will be cheaper, but much more line memory and if you are lucky will last maybe a year. If you do use XL or any mono, especially on small reels, be sure to put the spool of line on the floor before spooling. If the line twists while spooling onto your reel (spinning) flip the spool over and continue spooling and it should go on smooth.

Default Thank you!

Thank you to a very generous member who asked to remain anonymous for doing some leg work and helped to secure donations of line and gently used gear from other individuals to our school program. He certainly went over and above to assist our school, the kids, and hopefully their future passion in the outdoors. I can not thank you enough, it was truly a pleasure to meet you and hope that we may be able to wet a line in the future.

With much gratitude,

Craig and the students of Westmount School, Okotoks
