Default Fly Fishing Beginner Lessons

Hey all,

I wanted to try my hand at fly fishing this year so the wife is paying for a lesson or guide trip this year as my Christmas gift.

So I'm looking for suggestions on who to go with when trying it out. I have no experience or gear so I am looking for a class of such that provides gear and a lesson to beginners.

Thanks

Thumbs up Lessons

Give Iron Bow a call they are offering introductory lessons in the spring and both Mike and Dee are very qualified teachers and guides.

For lessons Jim McLennan hands down!!

For guides there are plenty of options, but going through an established shop is your best bet! Bow River Troutfitters (AO Magazine Sponsor) or Fishtales.

+1 with the McLennan's they are awesome, and Jim was one of the first guides certified in Southern Alberta. Very good course and by far worth every penny, I cant stress that enough. They are truly awesome people, if you can get a walk and wade trip in with them instead it will be way better and more beneficial. It is more expensive but once again well worth the investment.

Dont buy any equipment until you take a course, that is the biggest piece of advice I can offer.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I will be looking into these.

Also thanks for the advice on not buying any equipment, that was my plan to make sure I enjoy it before I put out the bucks. This confirms it.

I don't know how I can't enjoy it, people seem to love it!

I still believe that learning from the McLennans was the best money that I have spent on my fly fishing obsession.

To the OP, good on you for being open to lessons. 8 hours with a good teacher will save you a hundred hours of frustration by yourself. You will also avoid developing bad habits that may eventually hurt your success and, more importantly, the amount of fun you have pursuing the sport.
