Ruger 10/22 ammo
I recently came into a Ruger 10/22 and have heard that they can be finicky with ammo.
Some say the round nose ammo cycles better than the more boxy tips. Before I buy any ammo, I would like to hear from you guys.
Any experience and recommendations out there is appreciated...
Thanks,

Best in mine is the CCI hollow point Mini Mags.

Federal AutoMatch has worked good in any 10/22 I have run it in.

If you're talking general plinking/Gopher shooting ,American Eagle 38 grain hollow points work very well in every 10/22 I've shot them in.The Federal Black 1100 count boxes are the same ammo at a better price, they're just bulk boxed rather than individual 40 count boxes.
The Federal 525 value pack boxes of 36 grain HP work fairly well also. The Mini mags worked well, just too pricey for me for Gopher shooting. Some of the lower velocity Match type ammo won't cycle/feed consistently in mine.

Can't recall ever having issues with my 40+ year old 10/22 with any ammo? Maybe I've been lucky? Doesn't matter what I seem to throw in there, it will cycle and discharge the empty quite fine.
I only had issues when using something shorter than a LR. I tried shorts in it once and that wasn't too successful at all

The only ammo that has given me any grief has been the Remington Thunderbolt. Dirty as hell, failure to feed, failure to eject, stove piping etc. Everthing else hasn't been a problem.

CCI Stingers are the only ammo that gave me grief in any of the 10/22’s I’ve owned over the years. Especially if a custom or aftermarket barrel is used, even with a factory barrel I found the Stingers hammered the bolt buffer pin way to hard.
My current 10/22 digested the following ammo without flaw, during tests to find what shot best.
At least 20 rounds of each was tested.
Federal Campion bulk HP’s(Blue box)
Federal Hi-shok solid
Federal Auto Match
CCI Blazer
CCI Standard
CCI Mini Mag
Winchester Dyna Point
Winchester Wildcat
Winchester 333 HP
Winchester T22
Winchester Super X HP

I've owned a few over the years and currently have 2 of them. The only ammo any of them have been temperamental with has been those squared off, longer top bullets, the Remington Yellow Jackets (IIRC).
I usually buy CCI (all 3-4 types) and they all seem to feed and shoot well out the 10/22's

Only issue I ever had with my 10/22 was rotary mag failures. I exchanged them all for Butler Creek steel lips mags. Sold my 10/22 years back when .22lr was impossible to find.

Big thread on .22lr a while back.
Consensus from a lot of people was the federal 525 value pack 36grain bullet which is great.
I shoot thunderbolts as well for value packs when I cant get federal but they are dirtier

The Federal 525 stuff does not jam for me and shoots great groups. Just reminded me to pickup another brick at P&D
The Volquartsen extractor made a difference as well. The sear kit lightened up the trigger pull. I'll take it to the range soon and see if I can put 5 in a dime at 50 again.

I just happened to change scopes on my 10/22. I grabbed an assortment of ammo and headed to the range. These were my results:
Ruger 10/22 Take Down. Nikon P Rimfire 2-7 scope
Rem. 525 bulk pack 36gr. copper 1280 fps. 1 1/2" @ 50yds 6" @ 100 yds.
Rem. Cyclone 36gr. lead 1280 fps. 0.8" @ 50 yds. 1 1/2 @ 100 yds.
Federal 525 bulk pack 36gr. copper 1260 fps. 2" @ 50 yds. 9" @ 100 yds.
Win. super X bulk pack 40gr. copper 1255 fps. 0.9" @ 50 yds. 2.75" @ 100
Win. L/R subsonic 40gr. lead 1065 fps. 3" @ 50 yds 10" @ 100 yds
Aguila match 40gr. lead 0.9" @ 50 yds. 2.5" @ 100
The worst I found was the Winchester subsonic. Very inconsistent accuracy and very loud for subsonic.

The Federal bulk pack of 525 works very wel for me also. I have used mini mags as well with no issues for feeding, but as mentioned they hammer the bolt buffer harder. I switched to Nylon Tuffer Buffer and that helped, but the Federal stuff is cheaper and kinder to the rifle anyway.
