North American 29
The North American 29 is the most common slam that hunters seek and this is based on accepted entries by B&C. Interestingly, though, there are 30 species accepted by B&C but the opportunities to hunt jaguar are virtually non existent so hence the 29.
Not to start anything here but it would be interesting to know how many species of the North American 29 that hunters on this board have. The AFGA, the official record keeper for Alberta, also accepts wolf entries but B&C does not so it's not part of the 29. Are there other animals that should be included?? I'm with gunslinger on the cats....I've been lucky enough to score a cattrick in BC (cougar, bobcat, lynx) but since we can't hunt lynx in Alberta I guess bobcat would be the only addition there.
Here's the list on the NA 29.....how many do you have????

NA 29
After scanning the list of animals , it made me wonder , having seen several of his "shows" , if the mighty white hunter Thomas Pigeon is not after this title, at others expense.. His "shows" on the taking of the muskox and walrus did not make me a real fan of his... Does it really show????

Re: 29
Why didn't you like the musk ox and walrus hunts????? I've got a real desire to go for walrus and would rate musk ox at the top of my all-time favourite hunts. For me, hunting the high Arctic is such a treat.

Re: 29
Maybe ,I'm missing something but I would just find it hard to take an amimal when in it's defensive circle, protecting their young.. They are certainly not charging or even fleeing, just protecting. Maybe I should take up knitting..next year lol..
Just an opinion, nothing more.

Re: 29
doug...the harshness of the country being hunted and the remoteness is all part of the experience. You can make a million arguements like you made for every species...killing a whitetail from a treestand.....a sheep at 300 yards....a bear on bait. The hunt is about the total experience not one element of it!
Actually, musk ox have been known to charge as well and several hunters have been injured and killed. That plus the harsh elements can do you in, in a hurry. Can't say that about your average whitetail hunt.

Re: 29
My list is too short
But I'm gonna work on making it longer
But I am with you Sheep on the Muskox, would love to do that hunt. Maybe not in the severe winter conditions though. I got a Shockey video, I think he did it in the fall, looked like he could have just as easily been Caribou hunting.....now thats the one I want!
Good topic sheep.

Re: 29
There are Californian Bighorns along the Fraser River in BC. As far as being in the 29, I think that whether you shoot a Cali or a Rocky, you can shoot either. At least thats how it is for the grandslam of Sheep. Dall, Stone, Desert & either one of the 2 classes of Bighorns, to fullfil your Slam of Sheep.
Guessing its the same for this Slam.

There is no seperate classification in B&C for California bighorn...they are classified as Rocky Mountain for the 29.

Re: 29
Boone and Crockett does have a category for Shiras Moose, sometimes refered to as Wyoming Moose, which many people include in the North American slam as well.
I have my own list of North American species that I would like to get before going to Africa.
I've got the following:
Mule Deer
Whitetail Deer
Moose
Elk
Barren Ground Caribou (Central Canada)
Pronghorn
Bighorn
Black Bear
Wolf
I would like to get the following animals prior to going to Africa:
Dall's Sheep
Mountain Goat
Mountain Caribou
I someday would like to get a Grizzly and a Cougar as well. I was fortunate enough to participate in radio collaring a cougar a few years ago which has "scratched the itch" for the time being (what an adventure). I've decided I will hold out on the Grizzly for a while in the hope that our Alberta season will be reinstated as I would love to get one unguided.

Re: 29
Crap right you are Chet......it was the addition of the Tule elk that brought it to the North American 30. Funny how SCI counts southern AB moose as Shiras but B&C does not.
And here I though I was over half way there with 15....I guess I'm right at 1/2 way. Unless I win the lottery I doubt I'll get the other 15.
Dall sheep, Alaska moose and Sitka blacktail are high on the list though. Those little Coues deer facinate me too and I suspect I'll eventually get a barrengroun and woodland caribou. I really want to do the walrus thing and when the lottery comes through it will be desert bighorn, Alaska brown bear and polar bear. Oh well, it's great to have dreams.
Here my list so far:
*White-tailed Deer
*Mule Deer
*American Elk
*Bighorn Sheep
*Stone’s Sheep
*Canada Moose
*Central Barrenground Caribou
*Mountain Caribou
*Quebec/Labrador Caribou
*Mountain Goat
*Black Bear
*Grizzly Bear
*Pronghorn (Antelope)
*Cougar
*Musk Ox

Re: 29
Sheephunter,
Yah, its a bugger when different categories pop up. It probably brings a few old time check list hunters out of retirement.
The Shiras moose thing with SCI and B&C is an interesting point. It shows you that a lot of the categories have more to do with geographical boundaries than actual species classification.

Re: 29
They are an awesome looking sheep Redfrog. I've seen them many times by Vaseaux Lake and they are indeed a very unique trophy that is most likely deserving of a category of their own. I know I'd love to hunt them one day.

Re: 29
Coues deer live in the deep south with Arizona and Mexico being the most common places to shoot one. The Sitka blacktail is found in Alaska and the Alberta caribou are actually classified as mountain caribou by B&C. The woodland caribou in the NA 29 are indeed from Newfoundland.
