The hopper dropper rig is a dry fly is fished with a nymph on about 1 foot of line separating them just wondering of anyone has ever tried this and if so how is it?

Yup.

Slays the cuttie brown-bows on the middle fork.

Tie up a hopper, dropper hopper with a hopper dropper and you'll get tired of reaching for your net.

This rig is a staple in fly-fishing, in many parts of the world

Nothing new,it's how us geezers indi-nymphed before indi-nymphing had a name and became bastardized with plastic bobber abominations.

LOL nice one Grinr. Yes us old buggers fished like that only we didn't call it anything in particular. We just fished. No indicator, nothing. We just fished naked. Well, not naked persay. But with no strike indicator. So you actually had to feel the fish.

I use this set up all the time. On Friday, I actually caught a 12" Cut on the top fly (stimulator) and a 10" Cut on the dropper (bead head pheasant tail) at the same time. That's a first for me. Felt like I had on a hog with my 3wt fly rod. Once the weather warns up I almost exclusively fish this set up. It's defiantly worth trying.

BARK284,
as others have said it's great set up. Only thing is i'd fish 18-24" dropper, for me 12" is just to short.

Grinr, good chuckles.

Been using this for years for big grayling in the kathleen and Little Salmon systems. Works great for them. Also used it for cutties many times. A staple for fly fishing for sure.

My first cast ever at the RDR was last week, and that was a double hookup. A chub and an mooneye.... Cant seem to target just goldeye as the chubs steal all my bait...
