Default Crappy reels!

Today I fished at pine coulee and i had 2 reels break on me! TWO!!! One of them was a 5 year old shakespeare and the other one was a 6 year old okuma! both broke the same way for me and my 11 year old sister. As I would cast it would stop reeling and the "spinnging" part of it broke off. And I did check - all the screws remained in place. Looked at them when I came home and I saw brocken pieces of plastic inside The good thing is that both reels I got as a gift and din't spend my money on it but otherwise I was very disappointed. Thank god I had my shimano sahara and a small Sienna to back me up. And those reels wroked awesome! I will Never buy a Shakespeare or an Okuma reel!!!

Yes, that is exactly the problem, the fact that they were okuma and shakespeare.

The fact that two reels, of different age, from different manufacturers, both broke on the same day, in exactly the same way, to me, indicates they were abused (knowingly or not) in the same way that forced them to break.

Maybe something heavy fell on them in the trunk of the car, so they both broke the same way.

It does not, in my honest opinion, sound like a case of genuine wear and tear, or manufacturer defect.

Well the okuma reel was sitting at my grandfather's cabin for 2 years. Who knows what happened there....but the Shakespeare reel pretty much was in my posession the whole time. You might believe me or not but I take care of my stuff. Rod cases reel pouches whenever I transport them or store in my house. I just think the shakespeare reel was just a piece of crap

There should be a couple of Pfleuger President reels sitting behind the shelf in the store, that you might want to try.

you sound angry , it makes sense, two reels in one day

but really, look at the reels they probably had it coming

you said they were five and six years old, depending on the amount of usage and maintenance i would say they were at the end of their life anyways, depending on the quality, but still, five years of hard use and fun times pays for the reel.

that's just my two cents

very interesting i have an old shakespear outcast from back in the late 80's early 90s that i still use to this day and love it because its one of the only reels i have that is a 6:1.1 ratio and is incredibly fast at retreiving line compared to my other reels thats a 4:1.1 ratio. like yourself i keep up with the regular mantenance and such on the reel and i have had no problems with the shakespear. i last year i bought an okuma and have not used it once yet.i have not heard of okuma before so i am not too sure of the quality of their products. hopefully you will have better luck with the new reels you buy in the future.
