Arrow Alberta Social Credit Party

.

They haven't held a seat in the Alberta legislature since 1982, but back in the day they ruled Alberta for many years. We don't hear much from them anymore, but they're still on the map and running a few candidates (so I hear) ... http://www.socialcredit.com/

Socreds were always linked to the Religious Right, going all the way back to "Bible Bill" Aberhart. Lot of Alberta laws reflected that. Progress didn't come until Lougheed managed to turf them. Don't think we'd welcome them back. ?

Default Surprised that they still formally exist

but it is apparent that it is just a very few unrealistic religious fundamentalist fanatics (?). I do remember the last MLA remnants, who ended up being independents or PC - Ray Speaker and Walter Buck. They were both very eminent populists and pragmatists who were held in very high esteem by their constituents and the public. Actually, we could use a few more MLA's of their character and committment, but you won't find them in the SC fold now.

I know the leader of the Social Credit Party. He is hardly a religious zealot.
He is a quiet catholic like the rest of his family. He helps farmers with land issues quite a bit. Including central and northern Alberta.

He used to send me Christmas Cards from Dubai when working for Delloite. Since Dubai is moslim and they censor every piece of mail going out of the country he would send me photocopied pictures of his wife and him each sitting on a camel with sand dunes in the background. Then he would photoshop a nice bright star in the sky. The pictures always made it out, and he always included a letter.

is their website a pure, one issue, advertisement for religious zealots? I have no doubt that they are well-intentioned and "good" people (hell, I have some good friends who naively believe this stuff is still relevant, and they are wonderful people, and I love them dearly), but they need to move into the 21st century to ever recapture any political relevance. It is such a waste of very valuable human capital (?).

And it seems to make no mention of any Socred candidates for this election!

Are they about to fade off into the history books?

That's what I was looking for, but beyond the donation page and leader biography there isn't much on the site.

There is a Larry Heather running in Calgary. He's way out there on the wacko scale.

Holy Smokes:

Is that the new Social Credit?

Not my party.

We never get this information in the Edmonton area.

Thank you most humbly for showing what is up in Calgary.

Whoa. Thanks again.

Psst. I am with the Flames.

Well, still no report from Greylynx (he must be busy plowing the back 40 ), but I did find out something today while voting at the advanced polling station. Someone by the name of Martin Owen is running for the Socreds in my area. With no website, no flyers, and no signs, he's running a very low-key campaign!

And yes, I voted for the best party out there ...

I still remember, as a young child my grandfather sporting a socred button pinned to the truck visor of his '53 ford half ton.

MacLeod: What ever you do please do not insult the Alberta farmers and ranchers.

They help us out in surface rights.

I have no idea what the Social Credit party is up to. There is your report.

You live in southern Alberta, how about a report from you and your people.

What the heck is going on in Southern Alberta? Yikes.

Voting has started (advanced polls), it's about to rain (makes farmers happily ), and the wind is blowing in the 'Wildrose' direction

End of report,

Mac
