Incredible event for sure. Never ceases to amaze me and I always wonder what it will look like after the next slide on Turtle Mountain.
Supposed to be a when not if event sometime down the road. Hwy 3 through the pass is a very dangerous and unforgiving place to hit the ditch. I believe the road through the slide will end up having a higher death count in the future than the actual slide in '03.
If you have never driven through the buy pass road (Frank industrial park to Hillcrest Mines) closer to the river give it a try it is very scenic and a much better place to get close to the slide than the hwy pull over areas.
Wiki has a decent article

Yes southern AB is beautiful.
I don't really find the roadways all that dangerous though.
If Im not in 4low then its not bad lol
I believe its more the drivers than the pathway that is the threat.

And yes Frank slide is pretty amazing to see.

Yes the backroad is the best to see the slide. My Great Grandpa helped re- building the CPR line after the slide.

I've been through there several times and was overwhelmed the first time through the area. I wonder if it would be feasible to close the area down and bring some explosives in to prevent further tragedy? If they know it's going to happen why not correct it. Alberta has a good doppler system in place for tornado warnings it would only make sense to fix up other posing threats.

I find the slide to be eerily beautiful. Shame that so many lives lost. One of my favorite stretches of hwy out of anywhere I've been.
