Default Handloading FTX's to replicate Leverevolution

An esteemed member and I shoot .444 Marlin. We acquired some Hornady 265gr. FTX's and I downloaded the load data from the Hornady website. The brass must be trimmed nearly .200" shorter to allow for the longer ogive and pointed tip of the FTX (leverevolution) bullets. Those of you that shoot either the .444 or 45-70 will notice that factory Leverevolution brass is accordingly shorter.

Anyhow, when using virgin brass or spent Leverevolution brass, it first of all doens't make in far enough into the flaring die to actually flare it. Second, it also doesn't make it far enough into the Lee factory crimping die to achieve a crimp. I'm thinking that I need to purchase another set of dies and have a machine shop grind it down the difference between standard SAAMI case lenght and the required Leverevolution lenght.

Has anyone else reloaded FTX's and what solution have you come up with, either .444, 45-70 and I suppose .450 as well. Oh, if any of you guys shoot factory Leverevolution .444 and have no plan to reload it, I sure wouldn't mind getting my hands on it as it will save me some trimming time. Thanks.

Just thought that you might be interested to know that Hodgdon are releasing a new Leverevolution powder early next year. It and the Superformance powder are the equivalent of the blends that Hornady have been using.

The best way to solve your problem is to purchace a Hornady three die set for your .444 Marlin. You will also have to purchace Hornady's seating stem #397117 so you don't damage the tips on the FTX's. If you can't find them locally you can order them from Midway USA http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=873262. If you can't get the seating stem from Midway phone Hornady @ 1 800-338-3220 Ext. 208 and talk to Lonnie.

Thanks for the info. I will check into that, I'd much prefer buying a set of dies to accomodate this special reloading project than modifying my present dies as I may still want to shoot standard 265gr. flat points. Thanks again.

According to Lonnie, at Hornady, their die will do the job without modification ecxept the seating stem.
