I only shoot steel with Bergers but I used a 200gr ELDX out of my 300wm last year on my mule deer. The shot was 730 yards and I was surprised at how bad the bullet blew up. The largest piece I found was only about 20gr.

No experience with either yet, but the ELD-X are shooting awesome on paper so far. Hoping to find out how they work pretty soon.

Shot my pronghorn last fall with the 147gr ELD-X out of my 270win at about 150yrds, dumped him and very little damage. Was happy with the performance. Given my presence I’ll take a partition over either...

Bergers
Have shot a number of big game animals with the VLD. Always have had good results, no pass through but have not had to track one yet. That being said though, I would really like to try the Eldx. This Bullet definatlly has my attention and would love to hear others experience with them.

I used 145gr eld-x last year on a cow moose with my 270wsm. Was about 130 yards. First shot through the lungs and she was probably done right there but I am from the school of shoot til its down. Second shot through the shoulder. Broke the shoulder but only found part of the jacket about 2" into the heart. I am a accubond or partition guy normally.

Sounds like Eld-X has about the same lack of weight retention as the Berger VLD. The high BCs dont matter much of they cant be reliable to always penetrate to the vitals. Ive heard a lot of good info on the Accubond Long Range. Good low speed mushrooming while still maintaining good weight retention.

I like the Bergers myself. Yet to have one not perform well on game and I’ve seen quite a few dispatched by others using the same. I’ve a friend who’s trying the ELD-X out in a couple rifles and has shot two critters with them. As stated above, similar to Berger in performance on game. Think he’s trying LRABs this year though.

I shot a sheep with the .284 ELDX at 200yds last year, and my brother shot a bull moose at 30yds with the same bullet last fall. Impact velocities were about 2600fps and 2850fps respectively.
I had a pass thru on the sheep, and DRT.
My brother took several shots, at least 3 through vitals. He quartered the moose in the field, and did not recover any of the 3 bullets, but they were not pass thru.
Can’t say I’m too impressed with the ELDX performance on the moose.

You say three shots into the vitals, which vitals did they hit and what did those vitals look like?

I can’t tell you, because I wasn’t there to butcher the moose. What I can tell you from his story is that things got pretty Western there for a bit!
Vitals on the pass thru shot on the sheep were actually similar to what I would expect from an Accubond or TSX: broad wound channel and good (but not huge) exit.
No liquefied chest cavity, just good expansion and (although the bullet was not recovered so I am assuming) weight retention. No fragments were found in the animal.

How fast were they going leaving the muzzle?

For the moose I'm gonna guess around 2850fps since it was only a 30yd shot.

They both do what they are described to do. If you shoot for shoulders etc dont use them, use a monolithic they blow up as designed. If you shoot for lungs liver heart they shoot well and turn the internals into mush. Have not had to use the eld-x past 400yet where it is supposed to mimic a monolithic.

Muzzle velocity was nothing crazy: my chrony reads an average muzzle velocity of 2900fps.

What caliber do you plan on using? I have also had great success with Berger. Deer and elk. The 215 gr 30 cal is an incredible bullet as is the 6.5 cal 130 gr hunting vld. These bullets are shot out of a 300 Win Mag at 2995 fps and a 6.5X47 at 2950 fps. Farthest deer was 734 yds and a elk at 650 yds. The 130 gr really was stacking up Texas Whitetails last winter. As with all bergers I always check to make sure the tips are open and free of debris. Never had one fail to expand. As far as the LRAB's I have read they are very explosive up close. I wouldn't mind trying some ELD-X but the Bergers just work so good. I do have some 147 ELD-M to try out in my 6.5 Sherman.

I am not a Berger fan, but myself and a couple of friends loaded the 129gr ABLR in the 6.5x55, and they work well on deer sized game, and on moose.

I highly recommend the 215 Berger. It’s a perfect match for the 300 Win Mag with H1000. But if you do decide to try some ELD-X in your Rifles please let us know how they shoot and terminal performance.

I have both the 140 vlds and elites shooting really well with the 6.5
Doing up a load for the 215’s
Showing lots of promise
I’m thinking about the 270 eldx’s for the 338
Have a box so going to see how they shoot

Ive got some experience with all 3
7mm
162eld-x 2900ish fps
200 yards Caribou,DRT pass through
100yard whitetail made about 50yards before expiring, pass through
163gr ABLR2900ish 600 yards cow elk DRT mushroomed and found in hide
5yards Black bear DRT (bullet mushroomed nice, front shot then traveld down back, retrieved in back straps)
300 RUM shooting 3150fps
190 Berger Vld
400yards moose dropped in tracks but took about 10 mins to expire, shot was a bit far back but it could not get up and I couldn't take a follow up shot as it was in thick bush. grenade
425yards moose DRT grenade
So my conclusion, shoot what ever your gun likes because all these bullets have worked for me. bullet placement is more important then which of these 3 to use. Also price and or availability might sway your mind. PM if you have any questions
