Default Swelling?

Anyone have any tips on relieving joint inflammation? I'm on my way to recovery from a broken tibia plateau and although the bone seems to be healing good I'm expieriencing some wicked swelling whenever I do any moderate amount of activity. My knee swells up so bad I can hardly bend it.

Right now I'm using a bag of frozen fruit and either Advil or Aleve but I was wondering if anyone knew of anything more effective in reducing inflamation?

Kurt... My Physio guy is encouraging the whole no ice thing. Says they have no proof that it helps at all and in fact that blood rushing to the effected area is helpful.

I know it goes against every thing we have have ever heard. I found it interesting actually.

Rest, ICE elevated over heart level. Ibuprofen. The more you push that knee the more swelling your gonna get.

Seen a lot of physiotherapists, shoulder and knee problems, surgeon, etc. Never had one say no to ice, guess there’s always that one guy though.

Maybe try the alternating method of ice bath and then warm.
They prescribed that for swelling after hand surgery.

Funny you should say that, when I was in the hospital waiting for surgery I was talking with a doctor, he said they did a clinical study that showed ice did not in fact reduce swelling but it did numb the pain. Then when I started therapy my therapist said to use ice for swelling. The lady in the bed next to mine suggested trying ginger and turmeric.

At this point I'm willing to try anything that'll help. Right out of surgery I was told no weight for 12 weeks but after 7 weeks I was ok'd for weight bearing. Now I'm at 12 weeks, I have 85 degree range of motion and only pack my crutches around "just in case". I'm healing up much quicker than what both my surgeon and physio therapist were suspecting, the swelling is the only obstacle I seem to be having a hard time beating.

Perhaps introduce some compression

Evening Primrose Oil
5 500mg capsules per day. Relives joint dryness, inflammation and promotes joint function in general

try Active Release Therapy. Not sure the extent of your injury and if muscle and tendons in the area were damaged. Active release sure helped me gain mobility and reduce inflammation.

To keep your knee from swelling up maybe don't do a moderate amount of activity. Your knee is telling you to take it easy. Light to sedentary activity until you heal more. I know it's hard to sit still. Injuries that don't get the rest they need end up taking longer to heal. Time to sit and tie some flies or make some bullets instead.

Home remedies for swelling:
Try a 20 minute epsom salts bath for your swelling.
Also you could try apple cider vinegar mixed equally with water, then warmed up. Soak a towel with the warm vinegar and wrap your knee twice a day. Also, twice daily drink 2 oz. apple cider vinegar mixed with water and honey.
Eat some pineapple too. It has bromelain that when in the bloodstream reduces inflammation too. White willow bark in tea has inflammation and pain healing properties too.

Get well.

Go to any medical supply or physio and pick up a slip on compression device. Continue with the rest and ice but compression will help a lot. The biggest relief will only come with time however.

Take it cool on the ibuprofen it's not good for you. RICE with anti inflammatory is the best as noted earlier.

http://www.polarproducts.com/polarsh...ystem-c461.htm

This little item got me back on my feet quick after a full ACL recon. It is exactly what you need and it will help a ton.

Unfortunately for you the bone bruising is what is likely the source of all your swelling and pain. It takes months and months for it to heal.

This no ice stuff is bs. I've seen and felt it make a difference.

Not true!

I notice when I shake the heck out of it for long enough I'm able to shake the swelling right out, usually followed with a nap

I would rub a little Jack Daniels on it. If that doesn’t work then drink the rest of the bottle. Won’t help with swelling but you will have 0 pain for the day.

You can try a topical anti inflammatory as well. Voltaren is available over the counter and you can get up to 2.3% active ingredient (diclofenac sodium). If you talk to your doctor they can prescribe a higher strength version (up to 10% I believe).

I did all the excercise the physio would let me and used that thing for hours every day.

I skipped painkillers and was recovered 4 months earlier than they told me.

Swelling impedes recovery and that unit devastates swelling.

Go to the doc and get prescription for Voltarin. Not the stuff off the counter but the real heavy duty prescription only. Had the same issue you have and it works.

Works well but it feels like you coated your knee with Rubber Cement. Sticks to everything
