Default Egg shells and ice fishing?

I heard an old timer tell me that dropping egg shells down the hole attracts fish to the area? Is there any truth to this?

I don't know if it attracts them but it sure makes it easier to see fish. I have used them for years and it sure doesn't scare them away.

You should probably read through the thread posted below. It was determined using egg shells is illegal.

You are right sir A letter I received

Thank you for visiting the Alberta Government feedback web site. Following is the response to your question prepared by Environment :

Thank you for writing to Alberta Connects.

No, egg shells cannot be put on a lake bottom.

Section 181 of EPEA states that no one shall dispose of waste on, or under ice, unless they have an approval (which you couldn't get for this type of request). Egg shells would be considered waste, and you would be fined for using them in this manner.

Eggshells are compost. I do not use them when fishing nor do I know if they assist in angling but this I do know, they do not harm or pollute a waterbody, not litter IMO.
Not rocket science.
Cheers

Eggshells (and white beans, white gravel etc) is usually put down ice fishing holes to help you see fish, not to attract fish. The material that lands on the bottom provides a high contrast backdrop that makes it easier to see fish against when you have you're looking down.
